Thinking about getting a SWB Rav4 I've seen, R reg, 100k-ish, decent Goodyear At2s, 12month mot but no history, body seems solid but a bit dirty. Doesn't look like it's been off-roaded, runs well, they're after £1400. Only want it as a shooting truck (like the way the roofs come out) so not every day user. Value?

Are these any good, points to look for?

They have an excellent reputation for reliability and ergonomics

Apart from the girly image I say go for it

Surprisingly quick, in a straight line at least. Moderate off road ability. Cornering ability 0.

£1400 would be plenty for it, a dozen would be better.

They're not bad, quick in a straight line. They used Celica running gear IIRC with an electronic diff lock. Bits can be pricey for them, I had to change a headlamp and backbox on my old one and it was about £300 in total.

Which means you can transplant GT4 bits into them too.

Ok my folks have had 3 and each had probs, the biggest problem is people assuming it will be ultra reliable due to the toyota badge.
The first rav my folks owned ( a mk1 ) after 60k the gearbox packed up, the second rav ( mk2 ) the DMF failed, that was £2k and happened only after 30odd thousand miles, this problem is diesel related. The third was a 180 top of the range model, with sat nav that didnt work, with run flat tyres and sensors on that kept fking up and only 1 dealer within 70 miles had the kit to reset them because not all dealers have the kit or a tech on hand who's trained to use it.

Even so they are ok and i rate them quite highly, the mk1 bubble shape you are looking at are pretty good but not without quirks, generally they are quite tough but they are not a serious off roader, it's a car with perm 4 wheel drive on stilts and handles accordingly. I prefer the vitara which has a proper gear box and the engine is the right way round but if it's a rav you want I'd go for the lwb version as i prefer the space.
A good diesel should do 50mpg easily, the petrol versions i've driven drink fuel on a motorway run. They are also good in the snow, both of my folks new ravs managed to get out of their steep drive and felt reasonably planted on the road.
