Sold my 996 4S and not sure what to buy.........

As per the title. Just sold my 4S privately within 4 days! I thought I fancied a E90 folding hard top cab and maybe still do (either a 330/335 msport) but also find myself now opening my mind to all sorts of metal. My budget is about 26-27K tops and I want something with 4 seats minimum so it can be used by either me or the wife to transport the 3 kids. I would be using it 3 days a week for a 60 mile commute but am used to low 20's MPG from the porker but wouldn't want to go MUCH lowere than 20 MPG for an A road commute.
Current bizzare thoughts are;
- Circa 2007 E90 Cab
- Circa 2005 645/650 cab
- Circa 2008 135 Msport cab
- Circa 2006 Audi S4 Cab
- 2010 Focus RS in viper green with lux2 and for sale locally
- 2005 M5, black/black and for sale locally
- 2006 Mini Cooper S GP special edition with the fancy kit etc (and leave a significantly larger amount of money in my bank!). We had a pretty basic NA cooper when they 1st came out and really liked it.
I know the above cars have little in common other than being in my budget by varying degrees and some of them go topless (which I fancy but living in Scotland chances to take advantage of roof down motoring are not that often!).
I nearly always have a clear car change path mapped out in my mind but this time I am really struggling. Planning to go for a drive around a few local dealers tomorrow to see if I become inspired by anything!
Thoughts/suggestions from fellow PH-ers welcomed..........!

As previously mentioned lots of RS4 Saloon/Avant/Ragtop around for your budget, although the only time I hear about RS4's nowadays is when they get stolen, seems they attract a decent amount of attention (for good reasons) from the wrong kind of people.
Personally the S4 sounds nice to me, Lovely sounding 4.2 V8 and quattro.

I think the main criteria missing from the OP is how new he wants the car to be, and how much depreciation he can handle, as these both affect running costs.
My only comment here is that most performance saloons that I've driven have left me dissapointed because they've been too much of a compromise.

I would have suggested some classics, but with kids, safety is very important so I'd opt for a reasonably modern car personally.

Hi Steve,
So you've sold my old C4S then!
I am currently driving a 2007 e92 M3 and can only sing it's praises as a fun family car. It really suits every occasion from Sunday hooning on your own to a family day out or trip to the shops. I bought mine 18mths ago and it has just ticked over 14k miles with full BMW history and warranty until Nov. 2010.
However, my sister in law is looking to sell her Maserati Granturismo so I have been contemplating sale of the M3. If you can raise your budget to £33k then we could possibly do another deal! ;-)

Out of the list I'd go RS. Why? well it's probably the most different from the 996. I think all else will just feel too similar, but just not as good.Current bizzare thoughts are;

The RS will be much harder to compare to, so it won't matter if it's as good or not, because it'll be so different.
Like the MCS too, but a lot of money for a small car and the extra poke of the RS will probably be welcome.
