Typical Lincolnshire market town. Very quiet, limited entertainment and you have to drive a long way to get anywhere. But property is cheap and crime way below average. Lincolnshire people are more friendly than their reputation suggests, but don't expect them to throw themselves at you begging to be your friend. Surrounding countryside is not especially attractive - very flat and mostly planted with cabbages. Personally I prefer Louth - better scenery and 10 minutes from Cadwell Park. But I'd be happy to live in Sleaford if work took me there.

Quiet and cheap suits me. Is there a 'proper' A&E type hospital etc?

Providing the horse is still alive, the level of excitement should be approximately the same as when I last went there.

Take a book.

I lived there from 85 - 2000 ish, my parents still do live there.

It's a pretty place but it's full of mouth breathers and with the RAF just up the road you have the typical squaddie/townie situation on a Sat night (it was actually on a documentary years ago about the most violent market towns in the UK). It has few facilities and limited shopping choice. Property is overpriced for the location. Pretty good schools though.

There is no proper A&E in town. Lincoln is probably closest.

The villages outside are lovely, I like Heckington.

I suppose it depends on what you want. Somewhere just to live it's quite pleasant, not much happening though without a drive. No good restaurant in town but lot's of nice pubs around the area.

I went to school in Sleaford. The schools were at that time some of the best in the county. The rest of the town is a bit dull - I'm sure the horse died several years ago wink

I'd look at the villages close by for somewhere to live if you needed to be close to Sleaford - Heckington, probably Ruskington or even Billinghay.

Otherwise I'd go for somewhere closer to Lincoln. I've always liked the idea of Woodhall Spa or Horncastle should I (for some reason I can't fathom wink ) return to Lincolnshire.

Dont bother with Ruskington unless you love the feel of sink estates.

It does not get better then either of the Rauceby's. Undulating countryside, Cotswold Stone everywhere and thoroughly delightful.

Lincoln is the only acceptable place to live in Lincolnshire. Maybe Louth at a push if your over 50.

Having been for a meal in Sleaford with a couple of friends (who were in the RAF), I would like to point out that the trouble is caused by the moron locals, I have never seen such abuse as we got while walking round Sleaford! (not in uniform, but merely because we looked respectable (shirt instead of shellsuit), this was on a sunday lunchtime, outside a family pub.

IIRC, there are warnings at RAF Cranwell about the level of violence AGAINST air force staff, and advice to only go out in a group of four or more, and to dress down so you "fit in" with the scum that live there!

I have lived in Lincoln all my life, now nearly 24 and it has it's pro's and con's as does anywhere, thankfully the Pro's outweigh the con's. From experience and to back up what others above me have said, it is rather small, not alot to do and houses the majority of the chavatious idiots Lincolnshire has to offer. I would definatley be more inclined to work your way back towards Lincoln down the A15 and stop off at some of the little villages. You have Navenby, Harmston one side and a bit further across the other side you have Scopwick, Metheringham, Woodhall Spa, Dunston and Nocton; Metheringham being the largest of them all.

Bustard Inn is pretty nice this time of year smile

There are some very nice places outside of Sleaford. Personally, I'd like to buy a house in B1tchfield, just so I can tell everyone where I live with a smile on my face.

Good advice. My point is it causes friction and the moron locals see the RAF boys as a threat so it kicks off. Of course if it wasn't RAF it would be some other excuse. Being the officer training centre you could spot the trainees a mile off.
I now live in Sandhurst and the same applies here.
Never meant to imply that the RAF started 'it'.
