How does the Harman Karden compare to the Audi's BOSE? I love the bose in my s4 its the best all round sounding stereo I've had in a car. Might be swapping to an e46 m3 sooon which has HK. One of the things I'll really miss with the audi is its BOSE!

Interesting - I have Bose in my 997 and think it's pretty average (not as good as the upgraded system in my E60).

Had Harmon Kardon in my old E46 - it was better than the standard system but not by that much. I suspect it won't match the system in your Audi which sounds as though it is pretty good.

However, the M3 will drive better than an S4 so you'll get more entertainment from that without needing Ken Bruce through a Bose system anymore!!

I fitted the Alpine upgrade which comprised of a power amp, door speakers and door corner speakers which really improved the stock system in my E92.

IIWY I would investigate the possibility of an Alpine (or other proper Hi-Fi) for your car and it is a fairly cost effective way of improving the sound.
HK is 'proper' Hi-Fi whereas Bose is design over substance.

I had HK in my E46 M3 and to be honest it was useless, whereas the HK fitted to the Fiancees Mini Cooper S was brilliant, so im not too sure why the M3 sysytem was so poor in comparison

We then had an A3 SLine that had BOSE and it was great, and other Audis i have been in with it fitted have been equally good

I had an E46 with the HK system and an Audi A4 with the Bose system. (within months of each other)

The Bose system was superior IMHO.

Anyone had experience of the Mark Levinson system on an IS Lexus?

No personal experience but their system is supposed to be the dogs. Along with the system in Jaguars it's about as good as it gets (or at least so I've read)

Oh well, I guess I'll have to either upgrade it if I feel the need or get a nice exhaust system and listen to that screaming engine instead! Ha! I had a mini cooper s too with the hk stereo and it was very impressive!

HK in the M3 is utter sh*te. And they have very rattly cabins too which doesnt help. The "subwoofer" sounds like a mouse beating a matchstick against the boot floor. A friend of mine had a retrofit custom subwoofer from Germany installed and that made a huge difference, cant quite remember the name of it. The Bose system is far superior. But the engine does provide a thrilling soundtrack..couple it with a Borla exhaust and it sounds amazing...

Disagree. The HK in my E46 M3 was very good and it certainly didn't have a rattly cabin.

Even the standard system in the IS is superb. The Mark Levinson system is absolutely remarkable.

I agree as well that it won't match the system in your Audi.

The salesman promoted the Bose system in my TT as a good thing. It isn't. I'm glad the amp died just inside the warranty period as it's £500. At least there is some bass now.

Not heard the HK.

'BMW' and 'Decent stereo' are not often used in the same sentence. The standard unit in my old 330d was woeful, I had to add an amp and replace speakers.
The HK system in my M3 is adequate enough that I won't upgrade it, apart from an intravee that I fitted today.

Sunroof open, windows down and > 25deg is where it's at though really.

The Lexicon Logic 7 system in my 330i is far superior to the Bose in my old 996 C4S

The Carver in my Z4 is fantastic compared to the HK of the E46. But I seem to recall the Bose being pretty impressive when passengered about in a Bose equipped A8.

I went from an E46 330ci with HK to a new A3 with Bose, and I much prefer the HK.
The Bose is clear (and loud) but really lacking in depth. The HK in comparison seemed to fill the car, even at modest volumes. It just seems to sound more 3 dimensional somehow, and the bass much more defined.
I was so disappointed with the sound of the Bose that I even took the A3 back to the dealers, as I was convinced they'd just fitted the Bose speaker covers to a standard ones!
I guess it comes down to personal preference, but playing the same CD in the A3 and then immediately in the E46 (my wife ran it for a while so I had both on the drive)left me in no doubt that for my ears (and music) the HK was superior.

I have a 330Ci with HK and think it is quite good. I play all sorts of music, rock/dance/jazz at low, medium and high and it sounds pretty good to me.
