Bargain MK2 Golf GTI 8v

Hi all,

Thought i'd post some pictures of my latest toy, always had a hankering for a big bumper GTI but never got round to owning one. Not had a chance to clean it yet so this was how i picked it up taken at Goodwood early this morning. Whislt i'm still forking out the national debt in nursery fees i needed a cheap bit of fun that i can tick off my "cars to own" list, typically for us i briefly mentioned it to the wife on friday night and by saturday evening i had a 91 J plate Golf GTI sitting on the drive that we paid the tidy sum of £800. For a 20 year old car it's in pretty good condition few usual bits of corrosion in the usual places but i'm looking forward to tinkering in the best way i know and love. I'll look to keep this post as a rolling diary of the stuff done. Couldn't believe how tight it drives for not only a 20 year old car but one that's done 143k.

Thanks guys, i was so surprised how civilised it is to sit in and drive for an old car, all my freinds are telling me to keep it original and not mess with it, i just have a bit of an itch to fit some 928 wheels to it and maybe even have them painted white.

Don't worry, It'll stay original , there's loads to do just cleaning it,this will keep me busy for quite some time. I'll go round the car one panel at a time and detail it as best i can, i think the rear arches are going to need some attention underneath the plastic arches, i guess i'll find out once i remove them

I ran a small bumper 8v for a year a wee while back. Completely reliable in every way and totally simple to work on (even for a cack-handed buffoon like me). Great little car, drove beautifully and exuded cool from every pore.

Still got a 205 GTI on my 'cars to own before i die' list (always preferred it to the Golf when i were a lad), but never found one in decent enough nick for a reasonable price.

Quality purchase mate. Enjoy it. (but keep it looking standard!)

nice find Evo. Looks very tidy for 800. I have several (i.e. too many) Mk2 GTIs in my garage right now, but they are such a lot of car for the money. You may (or may not) have a pleasant surprise when you take off the wheel arches. Good luck. It's a nice low cost passion once your hooked.

Oh i'm definately hooked. I started tinkering with cars when i was about 8 and havn't stopped since. I used to show a Beta Coupe in the national concours comps so i'm getting quite excited by all the bits i can take off and clean

I've taken the wiper arms off tonight, sanded them back to the metal, zinc primed them ready for a nice new satin black finish.

Next up is the airbox unit, i want to get this out and clean the whole unit including wire brushing and polishing the metal bit on the end, whilst this is out i'll begin cleaning the left side of the engine bay and treat some of the minor rust that has set in. I'll probably paint this area and blend it in to the rest of the panel.

I sat and looked at the engine bay tonight working out a diary of what to take off first. I also want to remove the front slam paneland repaint this black just to make good. As you can see i'm going to have plenty to do but that's why i bought it. I also have a bit of a fetish for taking the nuts and bolts off and having them re cadmium plated, all in good time

Once i've done the airbox unit and began sorting the left side of the enigne bay i'll post some pics of the progress so far though with two small children it may take some time

My time issue is not kids, but a house renovation, plus too many other projects. Maybe this winter I'll start on the white MK2. It sitting in my barn/garage with a blown head gasket. I have an engine ready to drop in with a 2litre bottom end and 8V head. I think it will be a long term project though, as I like to do things properly. Keep a good photo record, they are invaluable for others (me);) to learn from.
