Greetings from a South Coast PHer

My Mrs likes her Hornsea Pottery collectibles and stumbled upon something yesterday we're having trouble identifying. Having exhausted google and all manner of alternative searches, struck me that it might be worth venturing north and turning to the good ol' PH brethren.

Earn us both a few brownie points if you've got any experience or interest in Hornsea Pottery and could try and put a name and history to this piece.

TIA

I have no knowledge or experience apart from childhood visits to the pottery but you could try contacting the Hornsea Museum where there is a section dedicated to the pottery.

I worked there during holidays in the sixth form and when a student, 1980s.

Looks like an early stamp, 60s or 70s.

Oddly enough, my now retired parents volunteer at the Museum. I'll take a copy of the picture and see what they can dig up.

EDIT: I've emailed them the picture - will let you know if any of the museum boffins come back with an answer.

Thanks for the offer of help.

Aye, the backstamp looks mid 70s although should have a logo alongside by that era. Can't find the stamp in the main backstamp index we refer to. Oddly though the design looks later, we estimate '79-'84. Appreciate your input.

Message from me mum..

"Managed to find out it was a strata trinket box made by John Clappison in 1982. We have one in the museum but it is a different colour."

I seem to vaguely remember that there were some things like that kicking around in the seconds shop at Hornsea in the mid-1980s, but a different colour or pattern. Must have re-used the moulds.

Does that help?

Hmmm.

AIUI Strata was a pattern rather than mould, with Strata referring to layers of coloured clay inset to the lid. Strata trinkets were available as hexagon, heart or circular shape. nerd

Nevertheless it looks like the moulds were indeed re-used, with the possibility ours is a non-production item or second which might also explain the backstamp.

Thanks to your mum for the info, and to you for relaying.

FWIW Strata pic (nicer than what we found above)

Another message from me Mum...

"Wrong again, although he did the strata boxes at the same time this actually was done to the same pattern as a tea set called Romantic. The strata boxes actually have a lid looking like rock strata."

I think she just did a whole shift in the Museum, so probably had more time to check. Seems to agree with what you said.

As far as I can remember the cars belonged to that guy in keighley (whose name escapes me) who had a massive collection of cars so I think there was a bit of a rotation of cars going on. Will try and re post tomorrow after some sleep and a bit of thought (been up 20rs so far so brain not working well)

edited to add was it peter black?
