MPG - 5.7 litres vs 1.6 litres

Went down to Devon camping last week. 4 people, 2 cars and lots of gear.

Car 1 - a 58 plate 1.6 petrol SEAT Ibiza 5 door
Car 2 - a 00 plate 5.7 V8 Camaro

Both cars 2 up and loaded and driving in convoy.

Ibiza 40.0 MPG
Camaro 30.5 MPG


Ok the SEAT was more economical, but I reckon for an additional 4.1 litres, 4 cylinders, automatic transmission and a few extra kg's and ponies, the old OHV engine didn't fair to bad.

lol, The Ibiza driven normally at home for short/mid length journeys does 32-36mpg tops.

Never clocked lower than 22mpg in the Camaro.

Doesn't surprise me.

My 4.6 Mustang does 33mpg on my 300 mile trip to Wales and my old Mondeo (1.8) does 40mpg.
That's pretty much with the cruise control on and sticking to the speed limits.

The Mustang is a much nicer drive.

Fuel efficiency in the real sense rather than fuel economy.

My missus used to have a 1.5dci Megane. It was underpowerd and the gearing too high so fast motorway cruising would get you less mpg than town driving!

I was going through 1 litre a mile the other day. Best I have seen is 19 MPG.

I doubt the CDAs of the cars are that different, so the efficiency of the entire drive train at that usage level will be roughly proportional to the mpg. Given that the old-fashioned auto box will sap a fair bit of power, I guess the engines alone are a little closer.

Last motorway trip I did in the 328i (Staffordshire to Swindon) I averaged 38.2mpg in both directions. Not bad for a 2.8.

Averaged 90.1 mpg in my Passat Bluemotion on the commute to work recently.

A friend had a new Jaguar XKR for a few weeks, and I have a 1.6 Mini Cooper S. They were both averaging around 20mpg (and that's driving the Mini carefully).

What's the point? I should just buy a V8.

Yup - my dad's 328i averages about the same on a motorway run. Compared to my 34-35mph in the 1.4 Golf My conclusion: small engine in big car = no go!

I expect the Camaro doing 1500rpm on the motorway where the ibiza is doing 4000rpm makes a difference.

My Saab thinks its a bloody Evo the way it goes through juice, short journeys, using the power and I get 200 miles to 50 odd litres, its hopeless, might as well have a V8 !

I remember when we hired the LS3-powered Corvette in Florida a couple of years ago, the trip computer was showing 30mpg+ average on our jaunt to Miami. Not bad for a 6.2 V8. I think they have that thing that shuts off 4-cylinders when you're cruising or something.
