Is the grammar in this country really getting that bad? Don't companies employ 'educated' people to check these things anymore? Or do they just put John Smith in charge of advertising, give him some crayons and then publish whatever the hell he comes up with?

I'm no Oxford graduate, but I can't see how so many people have a problem with the English language!

It's not as if it's just a comma in the wrong place, it's an incorrect word!

Ah well maybe i can help you there. The reason the english language has gotten so bad over the last few years, is due to the fact that this country seems to be producing half wits nowadays

"Gotten" - really? You sure you want to use that word? Really are you sure? Here, on PH? You want to say "gotten" and get away with it?

Nice. And yes, this is true. There are a lot of disgusting people in this country now. Chav extermination would be such a fun Sunday afternoon activity. You'd find them so easily too, as most of them would be in the pub discussing their latest benefit fraud trial.

I used to live near a shop called 'Carpets Galour'. Big 2ft high red letters above the door. I suppose it might have been intentional but I didn't have the heart to ask.

There's also the 'Fugde Corner' sweet shop!

If you read Bill Bryson's book on the English language you will find that the word 'gotten' was alive and kicking in Kent a long time before the Pilgrim Fathers set sail.

A local pet shop has on display what it describes in six inch high letters as a 'Chicken Coup'. I suspect this would end badly for the chickens, unless they managed to acquire AK47s.

A glance at (UK) Ebay listings will suggest this to be the case.

I have seen so many Ebay listings that epitomise poor grammar and spelling.

One can understand poor grammar, but with the common availability of spell checkers, it's difficult to see how some people can get it so wrong.

Oh, they've been 'educated'. It's what passes for education these days that seems to be the problem frown

The English language has evolved and has constantly changed over a huge period of time, we are just witnessing that change occuring during our lifetimes. I suspect it is now easier (and somewhat obvious) to track the changes to the English language with the web/internet/global communications, whereas previously in history we would only be aware of our immediate surrounding.

Those areas of the language where we currently recognise incorrect use will I suspect become standard within the next 20/50/100 years.

I am of course no expert on this but if you look back to our English lanquage even just 350/400 odd years ago (the London restoration period for example), our language is quite different to that which we use now, both verbal and written.
