A close friends first born is having her christening naming day (don't get me started) next month, looking for ideas for a gift that will be of some use or, something she / they will actually like / appreciate rather than a cheap silver photo frame from Boots or a money box.

Budget isn't huge though - up to say £50 most.

Any suggestions?

Small bar of silver. Hopefully worth more on 18th birthday and can be cashed in against a holiday/whatever...

Think this is a good idea, but isn't the minimum purchase £100?

Good call on the steif bear. My mother used to collect them, they're of fantastic quality.

Went to a naming day two years ago, the parents had requested something close to the giver to give their daughter. So some gave cards that said, will teach her to drive, another to give her guitar/piano lessons, another gave clay pot throwing!! bring out the artist in her I suspect, there were many of which I cannot remember, at the end of the day when parents reading the bequests it felt different and extremely personal too. I would like to hope that everyone would honour their gift.

Only problem with that is a lot of 18 year olds would just throw it in a glass with a bottle of wkd.

Mx-5? wink I'm not quite getting the hang of this yet! How about smash... Actually, forget it. The bottle of port sounds like a good idea.

Last month I went to a christening, we got the baby girl a silver bracelet engraved with her name and DOB. It was about £45 and is something she can keep forever (I have one similar and it's my most valuable possession).

I really, really hope you were going to say something like 'how about a smashing set of Benjamin Rabbit collectable plates and cups'.

I have just noticed that your in Sheffield, if you go in some of the small silversmiths that are left you could get something personal made up at not a great cost. There are some very skilled craftsmen still around.

For my Godson I got him some cufflinks engraved with his initials, I figured they would have sentimental value but could easily be "useful" as well.

Some great suggestions here thanks people.

Matt - any suggestions on a silversmith in Sheffield? I think its a great idea, and far more personal than nipping into Argos for some Elizabeth Duke.

On the bottle of port / wine suggestions - I'm assuming one doesn't just pick a bottle from the shelves in ASDA? I know nothign about port so would need some guidance here...

Oh and does anyone know where to get a peado bear from? - Daddy will appreciate the humour..... not so sure about mummy.
