Long Journeys

So I live in London, and use my car everyday for work - to and from the office and a few appointments everyday. As you'd expect, that involved lots of stopping and starting, speedbumps etc etc.

Is a good long drive - and I mean hundreds of miles - "good" for my car? If so, why? What difference does it make?

Probably. Certainly if you are driving a DPF equipped diesel it needs a chance to purge every so often, which it will only do at wide open throttle.

For petrol cars there's less of an issue. Certainly with old cars they could get coked up from lots of running in town due to partially unburnt fuel (running on choke) which is usually solved by a good Italian Tune Up (dual carriageway, run it to the redline in third)
