I was in the UK last month and used a sat nav for the first time, (Volvo In Built system), Did not like it for long routes, but it was great when you got near where you wanted and needed to find a house or street.
So I'm in the market to buy one. I want an after market system, so questions.
What model has the largest display? (The big Volvo screen was great).
Is there anything that allows the display unit to be mounted on the dash with the satellite 'receiver' sensor remotely mounted on the screen?

Most aftermarket ones have sensitive enough GPS receivers to work anywhere on the dash - doesn't need to be stuck on the windscreen. The exception there is some reflective and heated screens can block the signal entirely, in those cases you need an antenna elsewhere (usually rear hatch/shelf area) to pick up the signal.
Have a look at the Tomtom and Garmin units - some people prefer one over the other. If you're going to be keeping the car a while, it's well worth getting a proper dash mount fitted ( from the likes of Brodit(.com) ) which is so much better than dealing with the suction cups. Likewise putting in a power cable to where the mount is to save trailing wires from 12v sockets is worthwhile too. Any car stereo / phone installer will be able to do both quite cheaply.

Where are you going to be using it? A fairly important thing is to make sure whatever you buy has mapping for the area you want it for!
If the car will take a standard radio head unit then there are lots of units with big slide-out screens from Pioneer etc. There are various Far Eastern located manufacturers who do custom units for specific cars too, such as this one, for example: http://www.chinacargps.com/

Thanks for the reply, I didn't realise there were multi functional units that fit into the radio head, the chinacargps site looks like exactly what I need, but will only work in one car, I want to use in malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, I'll look at a garman that will take a remote antenna now I know thet are about.
