Here is the situation… I will try to keep it brief. I have worked for a BIG Global company for 10 years, moved up through the ranks and until recently have reported to the Operations Director for one of the UK subsidiaries for the last 4 years. He was an excellent boss.

Six months ago he announced he was leaving the company and a new guy was coming in to replace him. (Internal to the company) New guy duly arrived and in my first meeting with him I was a bit unsure if I liked him. He seemed to be a bit of a bully, something I hate. Roll on another two weeks and this guy calls me into a meeting during which he announces that he is re-structuring and wants me to do something different…but stay in the team… He says he is bringing in a new guy to fill my old role. I said I would think about the role on offer over the next few days... in short, I decided to find myself a new role internally, tapped up a few people in my network and in two days had 3 job offers, one of which I took.

Thing is I hate it, it’s just not me. Here’s where it gets complicated. The guy who took my old role has gone off sick with stress. Turns out he is a good mate of the new director – he kept that quiet!! My old team (30 project managers) are VERY unhappy, 3 left last month, which is unheard of. Revenue is falling; basically it’s all falling apart. The news on the grapevine is that they want me back in my old role…. I have already been approached for what was a “sounding out” chat.

However, moving to the new role has made me realise how stressful it was in the old one! Plus, I will be 55 in 5 months time when I can access my pension, which with our savings is enough to comfortably retire on. …. For the first time in my working life (never been unemployed…) I hate going to work, something which I have never felt before…

Anticipating that I may be forced back in my old role, which I don’t want to do, I am considering going sick for a while to ride out the last few months…

Thing is, I need a good excuse, that’s where you guys can help…. What’s the best thing to go off with? I have considered stress, but I may want to work part time after a rest for a few months, and feel this may prejudice any future employment.

Any suggestions guys? New profile created as I am a long time, fairly regular poster but want to retain some anonymity!

If you only have 5 months left can't you just grit your teeth and stick it out in your current role.

Seems a shame to end a successful career by going on the sick!

If I was planning to retire in 5 months, I'd stay, keep my eye on the prize, and just ride it out.

If you really want to skive off sick there are numerous ways I'm sure, but it's not the way I'd go.

Cheers,

FT.

I don't think committing fraud is your best way forward to be honest.

Leave and live off your savings until your pension arrives or leave and get a temp job until your pension arrives. Don't risk all that good work for a few months unhappiness.

Putting aside any moral arguments for a second, I think you'd be right to avoid the 'stress' excuse as it might come back to bite you in the near future. Mental illness is still unfortunately seen as more of a weakness than physical illness.

Can't you make a deal with them to spend the next 6/12 months as a consultant on silly money? You'd get to earn a nice amount of money, and don't burn any bridges in the meantime.

If you're really determined to go off sick though, I'm not sure what you could feign easily!

Newsflash: Most people hate going to work, most of the time. If work was fun, they wouldn't have to pay you to do it.

Think yourself lucky that you have had a job and career which has bought you enjoyment and (presumably) rewards above and beyond those that the man in the street might expect. Be grateful that you are not slogging your guts out for a pittance, waiting until you turn 65 so you can claim the meagre handout that the state provides. Do the right thing by your old team, and spend your last five months of employment helping them get back on their feet. GET YOUR HEAD DOWN AND STOP WHINING!

This do this... agree to work on a fixed day rate (pluck a large figure for sts and giggles) for x hours a day and no more, plus include a few things that would make your previous role easier, let them sweat it out and if they dont do the deal then stick with the current job... leave the work at work and then ride it out and enjoy life with a nice little earner for 5 months...

He worked for this company for ten years, and then they fked him over. I think I could put my 'self respect' to one side in that situation.

Yep, I had that happen in a restructure... then bosses buddy got rid of me in a cost cutting exercise!!

Then realised they knew nothing of the red tape procedures, change management, release procedures and contacts to key staff that I had taken 2 years to build up a relationship...

They severly fked up the releases for the next 6 months and got into a lot of bother and asked me to help once... I refused unless it was at a consultancy wage of X a day, they refused and in the end buddy went off with severe stress...

Leaving them more in the st... shame that!!
