Hello all.

I had a Dension 500 fitted in my E60 professionally. The car had to be 're-coded'. The fit is great so no problems there but the cars is definitely quite lumpy at low revs now, noticed it straightaway. It's a V8 so quite evident compared to the usual turbine smoothness. Any ideas on why this might have happened? The fitter has told me that if it doesn't resolve after a run they'll take it back to get the re-code checked...

Any advice gratefully received...

What age is the car??

How long did the recode take?? do they know what cip version it was running before.

The dension sometimes needs a serious software update, well I say that, it is more a case you can't add certain things until you update the rest of the car, it helps BMW keep things up to date. A pain in the arse really, but nothing you can do.

It is not the Dension, just the fact you are forced to update.

Did the garage use Autologic?

it's an 04. I took it for a long run tonight and it seems to have cleared up. I'll see how it is in the morning. As for the other questions I haven't got the foggiest! I believe they may have used an autologic.

I fitted my Dension Gateway 500 myself - I'd be interested to know where, and in what orientation, yours is located because mine's still sitting in the glovebox, with the back panel of the glovebox removed.

However, no recoding was required although I made sure the BMW dealer had enabled MP3 playback before I even got it. I was already on 2008 firmware for the iDrive (mine's an Oct 2004 car). There's certainly been no lumpiness, though the couple of times I've had the car serviced, it has reset all the adaptive stuff so the gearbox has had to relearn my style. It could just be that.

The Dension only takes a power feed from the CD changer power wires, and otherwise connects via optical leads so I don't see how it could really cause any problems in itself.

yep definitely cleared up. Guess the engine re-tuned itself after a hard reset of some kind?!

Anyway, I had them wire the dock cable into the centre cubby hole which in my car is under the pro phone. Then, in the glove, I can't see the unit but they instead included an override switch to allow me to use the 6cd and also an external module fitted to the top of the inside of the glove with aux-in and usb in. Haven't checked yet if I get power at the usb. Would be very useful it it does. All in all a very good install, just a shame they were a bit poor on keeping me informed (took two days...) but they did give me a hassle discount so all forgiven.

I have a 16GB USB stick plugged into my USB socket, full of MP3s, though the iPod connection gets the most use. The override button is apparently necessary to conceal the Dension from BMW's diagnostics when you take the car for a service; I don't know how true that is but have religiously switched it the couple of times I've taken mine in.

The chap I bought my Dension from also has the bluetooth interface for £55. I'm tempted but I also have the pro phone, which is itself bluetooth but only works with the car's own phone as I'm sure you've discovered - I don't know whether you need to physically remove the pro phone to get the Dension bluetooth module working. And it does require an extra mic to be installed, so I've not bothered yet.
