Quite running tyre?

Its a tyre question. My main aim is for a quiet running tyre, I have Toyo T1R's on at the mo but they are finished, they have lasted well. I have looked on Auto Express and the T1R's came out really well but on my 03 Ibiza TDI they arent that quiet or have much front end grip.

Not really that fussed on out and and wet/dry grip my main aim is a quiet tyre.

My rule of thumb is the more "cross" pattern the more noise. So look for a tyre pattern which is mainly vertical lines as you look at the face of the tyre.

(Psst... also it's quiet.)

How can you say T1R's last well, they are surely just above average at best even with cost considered?!

They have lasted me a good 20k and i had bought them pretty cheap.

What other tyre can you suggest then? This is only my first car and first time i changed tyres on a car so have limited experience.

Another clue to a quiet running tyre is to pick one where the tread block sizes vary around the tyre. This stops any resonance from the action of the blocks on the tarmac.

The Yoko 539 was one of the first to incorporate this, and it was a nice quiet tyre. Many designs have this feature now, but it's worth checking.

Pirelli P7 Cinturato should meet your requirements. It was rated as the quietest tyre in the big European group test this year. Added bonus of low wear, good fuel economy and surprisingly good grip.

It's the tyre I'd be sticking on anyway, and 6 months ago I never thought I'd be recommending a Pirelli

I have heard some good things about the Uniroyal Rainsport 2 seem to have softer sidewalls than the Toyo T1R which is better for me as the sport suspension can be very harsh over bumps and potholes!. They are a V pattern but resports of them being pretty quiet tyre.

Shame it's a 15 year old design, and has been discontinued for a few years, which means you'll be buying old stock which is past it's best.

I've used the Dunlop SP Sport 01 on a few cars (mostly work motors) and they're very quiet, and grip pretty well too. They were even OK in snow on a loaner Corsa I had in Jan '09.
