Have any of you lot heard of, or been to, A Salt and Battery in New York?

I will be going at some point next year. I think it's a great business idea and no doubt there is scope for other British fish and chip shops in The Big Apple.

Well I know, I did think that. But I like their business and I will also be trying other high-end and typical NYC food.

The thing with fish and chip shops in the UK is that if you travel outside of your local area they are very different and most of the time not as good. I grew up on Holland pies and can't stand Pukka pies. (saying that is probably enough to start a riot)

The same can be said about A Salt and Battery. Its almost as if it is their interpretation of a chippy and they have to make do with the ingredients/pies they can get hold of. I think it is great for me as an ex-pat but i don't think a person from the UK will go in and think it's the best chippy on earth.

Go uptown to McCormick & Schmick's - 1285 6th Ave, on W 52nd St, on the r/h/s of the UBS building as you look at it.

£6.40 for a small pollock and chips? Crazy!

It's fun but expensive. Good quality though.

Dean and Deluca's is another one to take in.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted to have a curry. Americans really don't 'get' curry.

So much so that even at a supposedly good curry house, my Jalfrezi tasted of stock cubes and had frozen chopped mixed veg in it.

As a Brit with access to Fish and Chips of the proper sort locally I'm not sure why you'd use up one of your NYC meal opportunities on reproducing the experience far from home!

Go to La Mela instead http://www.lamelarestaurant.com/

If you go as a big group they have a wonderful style - they just bring you food. You don't order (you can, of course) but they will just make it up for you if you like so that you don't have to persuade your group to actually decide on anything. Perfect for blokes.

Going to NYC and planning to eat at an ersatz-English Fish and Chip shop is just bizarre. I mean, it's your money and your time, but that's like going to Paris and being all excited about going to the McDonalds in the Louvre.

Oh it'll only be a quick snack you'll understand. In no way will it detract from other more exciting eateries.

If you're into Japanese food, there's a place in Soho that does a regional specialty called takoyaki. http://www.yelp.com/biz/otafuku-new-york

The fish and chips at A Salt & Battery really isn't bad....my sister has lived in NYC for twenty years and we tried it once on one of my many visits just to see what it was like. I think the name is brilliant.

You can get a decent curry in New York....try one of the places on East 6th St.

The secret to great eating in NYC is getting away from the main tourist haunts and trying some of the small back street places, there are some amazing restaurants that do great food at really good prices.
