I'm heading to Glasgow with the wife next month for our first overnighter without our son, we've picked Glasgow as it's a big enough city but close enough to home in case of emergencies. Mrs Statts is a bit nervous so I'm looking for good ideas and places to eat and drink in the city centre as our hotel is on Bath Street, any suggestions PH'ers?

The west end and specifically Ashton Lane area have some awesome bars and restaurants for you to consider.

There are so many great places. What sort of food do you like and what are you looking to spend? Have a browse of the List website and also 5pm.co.uk. Even if you're not looking to book through there, it has sample menus, reviews and so on.

Crabshakk on Argyle Street is very good if you like seafood.
The Ubiquitous Chip on Ashton Lane is also excellent, especially in the upstairs bistro, which is less expensive than the more formal restaurant below.

Edinburgh was my choice as it's my favourite city but SWMBO wanted Glasgow as it is better for shopping. I'll PM you and let you know how the nightlife is.

Does anyone know what Tiger Tiger is like? The sister in law says it's good but I'm not sure, it sounds a touch chavvy.

Tiger Tiger is very chavvy, avoid like the plague.

What sort of things are you looking for? Any particular style of food? Good pubs or big city ‘cool’ bars?

Glasgow is fantastic for a special night out, and you don’t need to trek all the way from Bath Street to the West End … you’d possibly be better off staying in the city centre and spending the evening in the Merchant City (walk straight past Tiger Tiger and within a block or two you’ll find all manner of lovely bars and amazing restaurants).

Actually, since you’re staying on Bath Street you could consider a drink in Hummingbird. It’s a little youth-tastic but it’s a nice glitzy place with a big city vibe. Worth exploring for a couple of first drinks before you head further into town, or last ones on your way back to the hotel.

(Full disclosure: our company designed the place. We design a lot of the more interesting bars etc around here.)

Both the merchant city and Ashton lane have a good selection of pubs and good restaurants. Couldn't really go wrong if you went to either one of those places. My favourite however would be the Merchant City.

As said above avoid Tiger Tiger unless necessary.

Really nice Spanish tapas restaurants in Glasgow called Cafe Andaluz. There is one right next to George square on St Vincent Place. Or the lane thats before Ashton Lane. check on 5pm.com for deals. Always had a lovely meal there or Jamie Oliver has recently opened a restaurant in Glasgow also at George Square.

Actually, just thought: by next month the redeveloped Corinthian will be open to the public. You really, really should go there and check it out. You’ll be blown away by the opulence.

Again, we’ve just redesigned the place so I’m a little biased … but it will be really worth seeing whilst it’s new and perfect. There’s nothing to match it in Glasgow for over the top glamour and I’d recommend stopping in for a cocktail and a nosey around if nothing else.

Red Onion just off Bath St in West Campbell St is superb. Run by award winning chef John Quigley, its an absolute gem. Never had a bad experience in it and service is spot on, check it out.
RE Ashton Lane, too many drunk students spoiling for a fight in my experience, very over rated.

So many great suggestions, thanks guys. The merchant city looks good, we're looking for a nice restaurant where it's a chilled atmosphere and relaxing plus she's determined she's having an expensive cocktail for her first drink in over a year, she couldn't even drink at our wedding, yes it was a shotgun wedding only 2 years in the planning!

Redeveloped??

Admittedly, it's been a couple of months since I was there, but it certainly wasn't crying out for a refurb.

OP - if it is Edinburgh you end up going to, my recent thread might be of use.

For your criteria, there’s only one place to eat (in my opinion): Café Gandolfi in the Merchant City. It’s pretty much my second home … truly excellent contemporary Scottish food in a completely relaxed atmosphere. Book ahead for a weekend.

If you can bear the layers upon layers of bling and shiny glamour, your best bet for a cocktail will be the new Corinthian. Ignore what anybody says about the place because the public haven’t seen it yet in the new incarnation. It’s a big, big change. It’ll be brand newly open while you’re here and they’ve got some world-class cocktail staff lined up for the first six months or so.

Bath Street itself is actually really good for some chilling out bars.

It's not really a particularly rowdy street (good thing!) and at one end is Buchanan Galleries for SWMBO's shopping (and some nice eateries) and there are some nice wee bars heading further down towards Charing Cross.

PM me if you want some more ideas. smile

Blue Dog is nice for cocktails.

Stravaigin for food.

The Willow Tea Rooms should be attended for at least a tea and snack.

The Stand Comedy Club isn't too far from you either if you're interested in that.

Some good places already mentioned.

As you are on Bath St check out The Butterfly and Pig and its associated tea room.

Merchant city is always good fun. Avoid Sauchiehall St and Argyle St at night, pretty minging.
Byres Road is also good, of you want an old fashioned but nice pub, Oran Mor on the corner is good.
