Speeding Swede Faces World Record Fine.
A motorist is facing the world's largest speeding fine after allegedly being clocked doing 180mph on a Swiss motorway.
The 37-year-old Swedish man was caught by a camera on the A12 highway between Bern and Lausanne on Friday.
He was travelling so fast he needed over half a kilometre of road to come to a halt, according to one arresting officer.
The Swede may have to pay up to £650,000 under a formula used in Switzerland that takes into account the driver's salary and how much over the speed limit he or she was.
Other older speed cameras had failed to capture the Swede in his £160,000 Mercedes-Benz because the technology was unable to detect speeds over 125mph (200kph).
A police spokesman added: "We have no record of anyone being caught travelling faster in the country."
In 2001, the 44-year-old Finnish boss of Nokia was issued with what was believed to be the world's heftiest speeding fine.
Anssi Vanjoki had to pay 116,000 euros (£95,400) after he was caught doing 47mph in a 30mph zone in Helsinki while on his Harley Davidson motorbike.
Traffic fines in Finland are determined in a similar way to that in Switzerland, so Mr Vanjoki's large salary at the telecommunications company was taken into account.

Gosh and to think how much some people complain when they get £60 fines over here.
Guess someone was in quite a rush but i cant believe the police saying it took so far to stop, sure if he had really wanted to stop it could be done sooner.

That's three miles in one minute at 180mph, so to include reaction time and actually stopping I can easily believe it took 1/2 a km to stop.Guess someone was in quite a rush but i cant believe the police saying it took so far to stop, sure if he had really wanted to stop it could be done sooner.

You pay the £60 and forget it. The points have a longer lasting effect.

I'd guess if he was unemployed and homeless with no assets at all, then yes, no fine. But I suspect he'd just go to prison instead.blueone97 said:

180 mph in a 75 mph CH limit - naughty.I don't know why he bothered when he
can legally go as fast as he likes just a bit further North.
I've had a completely legal 140 mph on the Stuttgart
to Singen A81 in Germany, for instance.
I seem to recall I had to pull in to let faster traffic pass ;->
They had a similar system here a few years ago based on means but it didn't really work as half the time nobody filled the means forms out and ultimately, those who won't pay anyway, didn't.
It does remind me of a case at the Magistrates court once when these fines were at their zenith. The court was dealing with all the "proof in absence" cases at the end of the list.
On one particular case, they fined the absentee offender £1000 for speeding.
"Now, Mr ******, do you have an application for costs?"
As there was no-one in court, my friend said "Yes, £3000"
The Bench was aghast.
"£3000???"
"Well you started it...".
