Had a bit of fun in my E36 M3 Evo with a nearly new Audi RS4 on a stretch of straight-ish dual carriageway this morning. How did my £4k 110k mile 300bhp old girl hold up to a newish £40+k 400+bhp 4wd RS4... rather well. Yes it defo had the legs over me, but not by as much as you would of thought. I think he was surprised to find me just a few metres behind him as we approached the roundabout at the end of the carriageway. And we were well into lepton speeds by that time. A quick thumbup and we went our seperate ways. However, round the twisty's, I was in no doubt that I would of been a dot in his mirrors.

Perhaps he was just cruising. No offence to your lovely car but any modern day 300 hp+ car will destroy you in a straight line let alone 400+

I completely disagree with this. Please name me a modern day 300bhp car that will destroy an E36 M3?

I previously owned a Z3 M Coupe running around 300bhp and my RS4 owning friend and I often used to go out for drives together. Not once did he 'destroy' me and he was always surprised how little straight line speed difference there was between us in real world driving.

Totally agree. He was giving it full beans.
No offence taken btw. I took my M3 in as part exchange when I sold my TVR Cerbera 450 lightweight with the intention of moving it on smartish. I was suprised how quick the M3 Evo was, so much so that I've still got her 2 years on (and a pocket full of cash from the sale).

There is a whole 4 seconds between them to 100mph. If you can see the irony. Reminds me of the famous youtube video of the Golf R32 owner that claimed he spanked a murcie. Before you jump down my throat Ived owned and love M cars but that post is just the driver out driving or out balling the other.

To nme a few Focus RS, even Golf R what would be right up the ass of an E46 or E92 driver depending

I agree with this.

I was given a Z4 Coupe (260 bhp i think) for 17 days whilst my 1998 Z3M (321 bhp) was being sorted & the Z4 was miles ahead in terms of performance.

& unless you have actually driven both, you will never know because how do you know that the other driver is giving it the full beans? Drive both & find out.

It's not a brag or something that's made my day...... I just wanted to point out how good the e36 M3 Evo is for such a cheap and reliable car.

Owning this car has opened my eyes as far as how much money I've spent on cars over the years trying to get better performance. For a few grand you can get something that's within 80% of the performance of most sub-£100k cars.
I bought my Cerbera new back in 1999 and paid nearly £60k for it eek Ok it's the best car I've ever owned and driven (in fact I sold it and rebought it back some years later!), but what I lost in depreciation and running costs..... never again.

An E36 M3 is still a very fast car and I seriously doubt that an R32 can come even close to it. They sound great, but they are slow.

The new RS4 is slower than the V6 Bi-turbo previous one, thus I have no problem messing with them in the Z4MC or the Porker. However, when I see the older one I stay way clear as the MTM ones are mentally quick...

The RS4 should have the legs of the E36, but can't ever see it being an easy victory

4 seconds between them to 100, are you sure about this? Also the 4wd will get a lot of the time advantage off the line, but the OP isn't talking about standing starts here.

I'm not usually one to jump in and defend people on threads of this nature, as they are usually just dillusional people trying to prove they have a fast car when they don't. However on this occasion I have seen the proof with my own eyes and experiences.

Oh and you said destroy, not 'be up the ass of', are you sure you know what you are talking about?

Actually your last comment is far more inflammatory than burwoodman's.

RS4 leaves an E36 convincingly.

I don't think the post you commented on had any mention to the 400bhp RS4 wink

You are also completely wrong with your statement.

Not surprising...

Very few B7 RS4's make the 415bhp they are supposed to. MOst seem to rolling road at 370bhp or so, just look on RS246 forum.

Of course the power gap at the wheels will close further since it's 4 wheels drive. So take the power a the wheels and work it bhp per tonne and they will be almost identical I'd imagine.

im not sure in the real world a standard b5 rs4 would be quicker than a b7 actually.

Please allow me to have some fun on a Friday morning..............

Both RS4s are clearly going to be quicker than an EVO but where does destroy come from ??? The early RS4 had a slightly better power to weight and the latter had approx 10% better and that's how much quicker the contemporary road tests figured them.......not too hard is it.
