Metal on metal?

I have a curious issue, over the last few days mixxys developed an unusual squeek, well, squeal kind off. It sounds like the unmistakable sound of brake pads that are well and truly finished to the point of metal on metal, but upon inspection I find theres plenty of meat visible on the pads. Is it possible that the inside pads have worn faster and are now spent or is there any chance of it being something else. I haven't had a chance to inspect properly yet but I should be having a look later on.

Been a MK1 like mine, there is everychance of the inner pad wearing before the outer one.
Pressure is pushed on the inner pad from the caliper, and the outer pad is pulled onto the disk brake. Therefore the inner pad will contact the disk before the outer one causing more wear.
This would be my first check.

Ah right, yes. erm they may actually have been binding for a little while.
That would explain the excessive wear. In that case it most likely is the pads that need replacing. but just the inside ones. Are both outside and inside pads the same? As the outside ones are in pretty good nick and I don't really fancy replacing them if I don't need to.

Nope, always replace pads as sets, don't mix new with old 
There is also a very good chance that if the callipers have been seized causing it to brake harder on one pad than the other that you will need new discs too! It's an easy job and pretty cheap too. If you do need them then MX5 Parts own discs are fine, don't bother with expensive discs.

Gotcha, nice one guys, I've check the discs over as soon as the weather clears up and pick up a new set of pads. Gives me a good opportunity to have a look at my calipers too so I can figure out why they're binding. Never know, she might feel a bit quicker afterwards as there wont be anything trying to slow me down.

My inner pad wore quicker than the outer and the caliper pins were sticking PLUS the pistons seized part way out...the result was the inside of one brake disc being so badly damaged that I'm fairly sure you could put a needle on it and play a tune!
It feels like a vinyl LP!

squealing isnt usually metal on metal (ie pad backing on disc, that would be grating and loud) squeal is usually the pads vibrating, they probably just need a bit of copper ease on them, on the mating surfaces between the caliper and the pads.
Make sure you have anti squeal shims fitted (on the mx5 its a thin piece of stainless steel that clips to the back off the pad). I only run anti squeal shims on the fronts not the backs.
I wouldnt worry too much about squealing as long as your brakes are in good condition it is just annoying more than anything.
