Following on from my rattle thread, I've now had the car on ramps to try and locate the rattling. It looks like the whole exhaust has been pulled back (by a speedbump etc) as seen in the pic below, so that it is now very close to the undertray. Could someone confirm that the clamps below should be in the middle of the cut out?

Cheers!

Dom

I would suspect they are however, you would have one hell of a job moving the manifolds enough to get the flanges into the hole so I would recommend just grinding the hole out so they fit. This would be the easy fix.

From what I could see it looked like there was an exhaust join after the cat (sleeve/clamp) which I could loosen if I took the undertray off, and then push the whole exhaust forward? At this join it looked like the exhaust had moved around 1cm, which would be about right - would it not just be a case of taking the undertray off, loosening this joint and "persuading" the exhaust forwards again?

Cheers!

Yep, if there is a means of adjusting it then go for it.

Factory manifolds and cats have no adjustment in them.

I'd agree with the above idea of just moving it if possible.

Cheers Ridds, maybe not as easy as I had thought!

Ireland - which idea, trying to loosen/adjust the exhaust or "persuading" the undertray out of the way?

It's a Speed 6 if that makes any difference!

I'd try the exhaust first.

If it hadn't been rattling and it is now then there's a fair chance that something has moved and should be able to move back again.

I am trying to work out what that undertray is! It doen't look like anything I have under my car (but then mine is a 4.5lw so may be different.
Is it bolted the the underside of the chassis and runs from just behind the engine back.. almost as far as the diff?
If so just put some spacers between the tray and chassis to lower is slightly to clear the exhaust brackets.
The brackets themselves don't look like they have any 'impact' marks so can't see it being in a collision with any speed bumps or the alike!!

There are 3(I think) separate trays under the car, so you can't see any of the exhaust until it reaches the boot floor. At this point one of the exhaust clamps has obviously taken a big knock and is bent, so I was assuming it had just caught on a speedbump and pulled the whole exhaust a centimetre or so! I've got the car booked in to a local place on Monday so will get it on ramps and see if i can just whip the tray off, loosen the exhaust and reposition...fingers crossed!

As Mark says that doesn't look standard, even less so from your description. Any chance of a photo of the underside?

Sure - Ill try and get some pictures when its up on the lift on Monday! They look pretty factory to me...basically 3 seperate trays that cover the prop shaft/exhaust from front to back!

Where in relation to the system is the clamps in the pic? Are they the ones that join the manifold to the system? In which case if you have a sleeved section after this then pushing it back wont effect this join.

If you are thinking that the manifolds are bent then I would be more inclined to leave the manifolds as they are. Bending them back will not only be very difficult but could result in damage.

Just try loosening and repositioning the clamps or making the hole larger in the plate.

The clamps in the picture are probably around halfway along the car. I don't think the manifolds are bent, I can see a sleeved section just after the cat which looks like it's moved, so I was thinking/hoping that i could just loosen the clamp around that sleeving and shunt the whole exhaust from that point back into it by around one centimetre! It looks very simple, but guess I will see tommorow!

As you have a S6, it may be different from the AJPV8. The V8's only have 2 'trays'. A solid tray under the engine, and a long 'lattice' type section that runs from the start of the cats to the rear of the propshaft. The cut out in yours looks like it's a home made cut out (I can't think even TVR would have done it that bad) Remove the tray and see if you can the clamps forward, if not make the cut out a bit bigger.

Cheers Jensen - sounds like a plan. The tray looks better in real life than in that picture - it has a number of cut outs, which all look pressed/stamped etc rather than bodged cut outs! Anyway, I'll report back after i've had it on the lift tommorow, and will take some better pics if possible.

Thanks everyone!

All sorted! Got it up on the lift, undertray off, loosened the sleeving at the back of both cats and knocked the exhaust an inch forwards back into position! I expected it to be much harder than that, but the clamps are now back in the middle of the cutout and there is no more knocking - cheers! The pic below is of the trays for those who were interested!

Those undertrays are totally different from mine ('99 4.5). Are all S6's like that, or are they on all later Cerbs?

No idea if it's standard, it certainly looks factory though - all pressed rather than cut out etc, and perfectly fitted. It's a 2000 speed 6. Was amazed how easily the exhaust pushed back into it's proper place, need to take it on a good run to make sure the rattle is properly gone!

I've seen a few other speed 6 Cerbs with that set up fitted as well as some earlier ones with the pressed tray under the engine and the usual V8 Cerb section under the exhaust. Its along the same lines as the sort fitted to other speed 6 models.
