246GT Dino engine swap

I wish this was one of those 'my friend' who's actually me threads but I'm afraid it's not.

A friend of mine has bought an old fire damaged Dino and is wondering what motor to put in it. Considerations are:

1. It's Australia, so my 355 motor suggestions, apart from being cost prohibitive, would be illegal due to bullst legislation.
2. The obvious options such as a standard replacement are too expensive and too rare.
3. An Alfa V6 is fair but a hassle
4. The guy is considering a 302ci Ford V8 with possible supercharging. Sacrilidge I think, but not that unreasonable.
5. I reckon an NSX motor and box would be perfect, but cost, hassle, rarity etc...
6. What do you think?

Bear in mind cost and hassle. What would you put in an original Dino?

7. I'm drunk and in a noisy club having let my kinda gf storm off on account of the alternative being to get married and have kids.

I've been through all this, inc Fiat Dino options. Yes, a lovely solution, but not one of the options.

I'm not sure he's doing the right thing, but it's a similar size/power V6.

If he does go ahead in creating a FrankenFerrari, please encourage him to at least do it in such a way that it can be put back.

No chopping it about to fit a yank boat anchor in it.

1. I don't know the legislation - but would something out of a 308/328 etc be more viable/legal

BTW - NSX lump probably wouldn't fit - big heads and all that.

PPS - On the assumption that he's not interested in resale value (in which case Dino motor, no questions) then whatever's going to sound best, as that car will be a right handful with 300bhp or more in it, so best to go with sound rather than outright power.

This option may have been dismissed but it shouldn't be. Any other option will strip value from the car as sure as setting fire to it (again). The difference in value between a bd child dino and a proper car would more than pay for a replacement 246 engine.

Anything else is nothing other than criminally dim.

It's the 2.0, not the 2.4, and probably too nice to break itself, but something like this does demonstrate that you could pick one up, sell off the rest and have an engine you could ship to Oz for not all that much...

Aw c'mon, the guy isn't doing this for any other reason than it's the cheapest way into a running Ferrari I guess, there are too many fussy owners, why can't the guy do what he likes ? It's his car. It doesn't make him dim just because he's trying to enjoy a Ferrari on a budget.

You could argue he won't really be enjoying a Ferrari at that point. You can get something that looks like a Ferrari that's made of fiberglass and costs a fraction of the price of a 246. It has an MR2 engine usually. Sometimes a Peugeot 406 engine...

The 246 Dino replicas are generally based on custom chassis with an Alfa V6. I nearly bought one.

Has this guy seen what Dinos are worth now? I cannot imagine it being uneconomic to stay with the original engine/box.

Like others say, if he can't afford it, sell to someone who can and buy a 308 GT4.

Option 1. is viable in Australia but you'll need an engineer's certificate. That's not too hard to get as long as the install is done properly (I have no idea if the V8 from a 308 will fit though).

How do I know it's legal??? My Brother has dropped a Small Block V8 (6.0 litres I think) into a 1974 Datsun 240K in Aus last year and it's now street legal.
