First time with own insurance

My dad's trying to sell his Mazda 626 but the guy wanting it (31) says he's getting insurance quotes at around £1000 (2 litre petrol, R reg). Is that normal for someone's first own policy? He has been driving as an additional driver for a number of years but has no NCB.

If that does sound odd are there any companies in particular, possibly more obscure ones that wouldn't appear gocompare etc, that anyone can recommend?

Directline don't go on price comparison websites.

They can either swing really cheap or really expensive. Probably cheap in this case.
