Garmin 1390 or 1490T?
Discussion
I'm going on a european road trip at the start of septemeber and am looking into buying my first sat nav.
Does anyone have experiences with the two sat navs above? Is the Garmin 1490's screen to big in the dash or does it come in handy for ease of use when doing a lot of miles and tired / lost.
The other thing i would like to be able to do is pre plan my routes rather than have to enter them in each night. The 1490t says it holds 10 routes but the 1390 nil. And whats a waypoint? both can hold a 100 of those.....

I have a 1390T but I'm probably not the best person to answer because it's my first ever sat nav and I'm not
sure that I know how to get the best out of it
.
I too bought it for a European trip and on the whole found it very good.
The traffic warning and re-routing got us to an airport on time, when without it
we would have been sitting on a motorway going nowhere and missing our flight.
It didn't cope with the odd walled medieval Spanish hilltop village when roadworks forced us to divert.
Its pronouniation of Spanish street names is very funny, I don't know if that's a +ve or a -ve!
It can store loads of favourite destinations in advance but not routes; am I missing something here? the whole idea of a sat nav is that IT calculates the route (YOU don't know the route!) It always knows where you are starting from once it's located a sat.
You can set Via Points if you don't want it to take you by the shortest or fastest routes.
I chose Garmin over Tom Tom as I had heard that their tech assistance was excellent and I have to say that when I had
queries or problems they were very very helpful.
