Surely there's a better way? Surely they realise that when driving along you're just gonna get lots of tiny pings as the fking stones bounce off your car?
Even if you take it easy some fker is bound to come hurtling down from the other direction giving you a shower of pebbles.
One hit sounded like a small rock earlier! It's a bit dark to have a look but there's got to be a massive chip from it.

Good question.

They used to do this around my area after first putting down a sticky layer of tar.

Stupid!

The middle class/more well off areas would get good roads and my area stty loose stones.

Why?

Because stonechips aren't actually the end of the world and we as a nation don't want to give all our money over as tax and are a nation of fkwits who always vote for a bunch of assholes who give all of our income tax over to a pile of wasters who never ever will work.

Oh and its a cheap and quick method of resealing the road to stop water damage and giving it some more grip

it may be cheap in the short term, but it last 10 minutes, and in the mean time it's cost a shed load of people windscreen, several bikers to have offs, huge numbers of stone chips to peoples pride&joy cars, etc etc.

Seriously, what's the point? either do the job properly (as in plane up the road, re-lay) or leave them alone

Do you want to pay 100% tax ?

take the point, but how much does it cost to loose chip the same road every year before doing the job properly would have been cheaper and last 20x longer?

that's before you account for the costs in insurance claims due to the st surface and stone damage.

Thought we were already paying a 100% tax for the roads? Or am I living in a dream world?

I think it's all about 'skid resistance' isn't it? The Local Authority measures this and if it's fallen below a 'safe' level then the road gets resurfaced.

Which would be fine, if it weren't for the wonderful annualised target-driven culture that has seeped out of the private sector (where it often makes a lot of sense) into the public sector (where it doesn't).

Despite its many other problems, cheap surface dressing does raise skid resistance back to a 'safe' level in the short term. And that single criterion is enough. Job done. This year's targets met. This year's bonuses paid. Children and small furry animals saved. The Local Authority can proudly boast (with some nice statistics to back them up) about how many miles of road they have resurfaced this year and how much safer we all are as a result.

Long-term costs, and indeed any other considerations outside of the specific targets they are working to, are simply of no consequence.

Yep done this on the road leading to Calver near Bakewell. I now simply avoid it as it caught me out the 1st day they'd "resurfaced it". TONS of stones with people on the other way going at 60+ seemingly not giving a st.

It really hacks me off when the council round here resurface roads like this... as has been said before, this kind of shoddy resurfacing lasts about 5 minutes in the real world - they've had to redo a load of roads around Carlisle that were only done a couple of years ago.

  • geek hat on* As ten ninety said, its all about the skid resistance. Over time a road surface gets "polished" by all the travel on it and it becomes quite dangerous, especially in the wet. Also gets a lot noisier over time as well, you can really tell when you come across some new road surface and then go back onto the old one. the yellow coloured "Shellgrip" is the same principle; a layer of stone that has an incredibly high skid resistance to it, i think a lot of the stone chips come from Wales as you cant just use any old stuff.
So, instead of renewing the surface properly or using a decent (and expensive) thin layer of stone and bitumen, they just spray down a thin layer of stones and hope to hell some of them stick! *geek hat off*

they did the road that i live on and i had to drive on it. my front bumper, wings, bonnet and front part of the roof now needs re-spraying or a hell of a lot of touch ups. i tried to get them to pay for it but 6 months later still no joy.

Why don't they just run a light roller over it after applying the stones?

usually do (or at least here they do)

makes no odds as they just don;t use enough tar to 'stick' it down, and in any case, the first time it see's frost, if it has not already gone, it will then.

Have you any idea how much it costs to plane a road surface and relay it, it you think you are paying a lot in tax now, suggest this for every road surface and your eyes will water, you will be paying them just to go to work.

Surface dressing should settle down fairly quickly, it is the twonks who take no notice of the advisory signs that are the problem.

The government makes money every time someone has vehicle repairs done, or has to slow down for traffic calming measures.

I am sure that is just a coincidence and they would not give revenue collection a higher priority than road safety.

No, sir.
