Ok, this may be a well asked question but I'm currently debating the merits of either an E46 M3 or E39 M5...

I currently have an E39, and wouldn't mind at all owning an M5, but... I'm being drawn in by the E46 M3, hmmm...decisions??

Any recommended reading or websites?

Depends on what you want the car for..

I've owned both and for me, the M5 was a better all rounder.

The E39 M5 is a fabulous motor but the M3 has a few things to recommend it.

It's younger, better looking in an aggressive way IMO (M5 is handsome but rather more ordinary in the looks department), not much slower below about 120, better on fuel even when pressing on, and more lithe.

original road tests show the M3 to actually be quicker through the gears
in gear times will not be as good though due to the M5's torque.

Same decision I had to make, went E39 M5 and glad I did took the family on holiday to Somerset in it, then on a weekend I can hoon around in it. Great fun and I also like the stealth factor of the M5 i.e. until you see the 4 exhausts you wouldn't know what it is......

definitely agree!

for me personally it comes down to two factors, firstly I have not grown up enough to get a 4 door car yet and secondly the M5 will not fit in my garage, when I suggested to my wife we should move house - she was less than convinced we should be moving just so I could get a larger car!

don't forget that the M3 does a great job as a family car, we are off to the south of France soon with a roof box on the top!

Funny you said that. My wife has a baby on the way and I've just bought a roof rack and roof box. The boot on the M3 is pretty big. Will just have to put up with only having two doors.

I went through the same decision when i bought my car, i really liked everything about the M3, except the V8 which it lacked which is my major automotive soft spot.

In the end, i choose the M5 and i'm very pleased with it.

In hindsight, given the changes that have occured in my lifestyle over the last year, had i choose the M3, i would have sold it by now for a car with more space, but having the M5 its stayed put and should be for the foreseeable future.

Thanks

Matt

eh? I have 2 children and one wife, with me in the car that makes 4 and the M3 has 4 seats?

It has a decent boot and with a roof box on can easily take all the crap needed for a two week holiday.

Thanks for the thoughts, I will do some more homework & take a look at the 5website.

I really enjoy the waftiness & quality feel to the E39 I have now so i'm sure the 400bhp M5 will please! smile

They are 2 very different cars. Each has their plus points and their minus points but a drive in an M5 though a tunnel should seal the deal wink

Fair play me and my family couldn't do a holiday in an M3 roof box or not.

mind you - just been doing a quick calculation of fuel costs - 2000 miles at 22mpg = £lots!

If you have kids the E39 M5 makes way more sense. Its big & spacious but that makes it a heavy thing(1800kg's) so the E46 M3 is just very slightly faster through the gears to 60 and to 100mph but if you looking for an all rounder then M5 makes more sense, especially as a family car.

E46 M3:
HP 338
0-60 4.9s
0-100 11.0s
MPG 23.5mpg (approx)

E39 M5
HP 395
0-60 5.0s
0-100 11.1s
MPG 19mpg (approx)

The M5 is older but still good very looking. The M3 has that bit more aggression and acceleration at low speed but thats hardly noticable and not really important in most everyday situations. The mpg could be importnant though as the MPG is kind of low on the M5 but so its is the M3 as well really!
