Ok I cant find anything directly relating to my questions on PH so if you could give me some assistance it would be most helpful.
Currently we have a 120d Sport which we have been very happy with but want to change to an X5 for various reasons. We would like to swop for a similar value to the 120d so I guess about 10k for the budget so im expecting a higher mileage vehicle.I was thinking of the 3.0d from a resale and mpg point of view but I hear the diesels arent that much more economical than a 3.0 petrol.I have also heard the cost of tyres is particularly exhorbitant for the X5 over other 4x4`s ?
Any other pointers or opinions would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Register at www.xdrivers.co.uk and they'll be able to help in great detail.
I have had a 3.0D and a 4.8iS and they are great cars. Personally having clocked up over 60k miles in both, I can't agree there is a problem with tyres. The 4.8 kept the same front boots for 25,000 miles rears were around 20,000 miles. Having been around Porsche as well, I hear for example the Cayenne can go through a set of tyres in 6000 miles due to the set up of the car (although I have no first hand experience of that vehicle other than the odd weeks loaned car) and that was merely gossip.
Mpg in a diesel will be mid 20's, 18 or so in a V8, expect running costs to be worthy of such a vehicle. Not cheap, but not mega expensive.
If you like that sort of thing, you won't be disappointed. I have a photo somewhere of my trip down to Le Mans with the 4.8 travelling at near on 150mph (in France officer
), so they ain't slow either!

Plus no point in the 3.0 petrol as they are the same mpg as 4.4.I guess it depends on how many miles a year you are going to rack up too as to wether a deisel is worth the extra money or an older car. My wife loved hers that much that now all she will drive is big engined 4x4's.
I guess we will do around 10,000mls per year which on paper doesnt justify the diesel. However wouldnt the road tax be significantly more for the petrol and wouldnt the residuals be better for the diesel ?
Hmm just checked and road tax seems to be the same for the diesel and the 4.4 petrol.
