fitting bigger wheels, a n00b question

i currently have 16" alloys and want to fit 17" with a lower profile tyre so overall the wheel and tyre size will match the 16"s plus tyre,
people tell me that fitting bigg wheels throws the gearing out and you lose performance, is this true? i dont really know much about "modding" so im sorry if this question offends people

Use a tool like this:

It'll show you difference very clearly so you can get the right tyres to reduce the difference in gearing.

with the smart car thet actually use differnt size wheels to govern the modle,on the same as the guy said earlyer this will drasticly efect your bottom end performance.
i have known people to put low profile tyres on there vheicle and be convinced that they are doing corners faster,but the reality is that there speedo is registering higher.so if you share your car with ya gile frend keep it to yourself good luck.lowere profile tyers will perfom better though.

Hint: easiest way to detect any likely gearing change is to run piece of string round one of your tyres and measure the length.
Then do the same with whatever wheel/tyre combination you're looking at buying.
Calculate the percentage difference (if any) between the two lengths of string and you can immediately see how much your gearing will (or won't) be affected. It also tells you how much inaccuracy will arrive at your speedo.
Also check you car's specification and calculate the % difference between its gear ratios.
Then you can see whether the new wheels will change your gearing by, say, "a tenth of a gear" which gives a basic idea of what the difference might feel like on the road.
