Got a random weekday day off soon, reckon there's nothing better than just taking a drive out to some great roads!

Never done the Evo triangle, so at the moment that is the most likely, but it's a good 100 miles at least (from Coventry), so it would have to be really good to justify it! (especially if I got stuck in traffic on the way and it took me hours!)

So are there any other places just as good (or almost as good), but nearer? Or if the Evo triangle is "it", are they any good roads on the way, rather than just sitting on m-ways, dual carraigeways etc, or other places I need to drive while I'm that way?

Open to suggestions - got the whole day to kill! Thanks.

Edit: any sat nav directions would be really useful, I don't want to get lost going wherever I am aiming for! What's the best "starting point" (post-code wise) for the triangle?

The EVO triangle is a really good bit of road, however the route there isn't that great, a trek along the A5 being the quickest way there.

To make it more interesting you could return via Aberystwyth, smile or you could spend the day just going to Aberystwyth and back. It might pay to plan the day around coming back later in the evening, to hit less traffic.

Anywhere in Wales is nice to drive though.

Btw on the triangle there is a cafe at the visitor centre at Llyn Brenig. (Which is a lake). The triangle is the A-B-C part of this map. Actually, thinking about it the triangle *is* a great piece of road. Worth doing twice. driving

Or, the sea front at Llandudno is really nice to head to for a visit after the triangle, but of course this is the busiest time of year.

From the outskirts of Shrewsbury find the A458 heading west I'd take the following roads
B4393 to the A483 at Four Crosses and then onto the A495
B4396 to Penybontfawr
B4391 to Bala
A4212 west taking the B4391 to Ffestiniog
A470 to Betws-y-Coed
A5 East then left onto the A543 after Pentrfoelas
Turn right onto B4501 down to Cerrigydrudion
If your appetite isn't fully wheted then double back and the loop the other way
Then A5 east, turn left onto A494, then right onto A5104
Turn right onto A542 for the Horseshoe Pass to Llangollen back onto A5 and then relax with a gentle drive back to Shrewsbury (you'll have earned it)
Alternatively you could avoid the A5 to Shrewsbury and take the A539 Overton and A528 south to Shrewsbury.

Done this many a time on my old VX220 Turbo and will do this run in a few weeks time in the Aston

I'd be very surprised if you were disappointed with the B roads towards Bala, they are fantastic as well and in my opinion much more fun than slogging up the A5.

John

Thanks folks, good stuff! Looks like heading to Wales is the thing to do.

Yep, was planning on going slightly after rush hour in the morning, and heading back later in the evening, to avoid the traffic (last thing I want after a good day out is to get stuck in M6 traffic crawling home - I'll stop off somewhere for a bite to eat, and head home at a leisurely pace after the evening rush has gone).

Any other suggestions gratefully received :-)
