Just looking to see what kind of figures people are forking out for insurance - namely young (under 21 :P) drivers...

A few years ago, I'd hoped to be paying less than £800 at 19 with 1 year NCB.

But having paid £1600 for my first year after passing and after getting quotes recently, it seems £1000 is a more reasonable target...

Insurance Co. sent renewal for £1400 but just making up a lower quote got them down to £1000 straight away which has got me wondering if I should try and get something lower... what's to lose? smile

Car's an Almera, TPFT cover, no claims/offences etc.

What are other young drivers paying?

For the oldies - when it comes to buying a nice car (I'm currently thinking 350z if I can in a few years), does having insurance in your own name and building up NCB make a huge difference - i.e. if everything else is the same does having an extra 2 years of NCB significantly reduce the cost?

It depends also on geographical location, type of car etc. Many renewals have gone up for some people.

That's true, but I just want a ball park figure to see how much room there could be for negotiation.

Well, before I decided to break my Celica st202, my insurance was £650 at 25. One year one, it's gone up to £800ish. There was a thread a little while ago about insurance, have a search.

NCB is worth its weight in gold. When I was 20/21 (24 now) I had a Supra TT and it was costing me about 1600 fully comp in insurance with about 2 years NCB.

If you don't have any NCB than doing your pass plus saves you loads. Well it did in my case. When I passed (at 17) the cheapest quote i could find for my Fiat Grande Punto Sporting 1.4 16v was £2350. I took my pass plus just after passing and that took my insurance down by exactly £400 ! Compared to my friends insurance costs, mine was the cheapest by far.

Mk1 Focus RS isn't in as high an insurance group as you'd imagine.

25, BS36 postcode, 0 NCB, 08 MINI Cooper S, £1300

18, one year's NCB, 1.0l classic Mini in one of the worst postcodes (M21): £720. That's a classic policy; all the normal quotes I got were around £1900. Last year (my first year) I paid £2400 with Direct Line.

Your postcode is what makes the difference. I changed my postcode to one in Shropshire to depress myself and my quotes went down by over 50% immediately.

17, first year, no points, no ncb, 1997 Peugeot 106 1.1, TPFT, £1,700

18, 2nd year, no points, no ncb, 2005 Ford Fiesta Zetec S 1.6, Comp, £1,200

19, 3rd year, 3 points, one year ncb, same fiesta, comp, £996

And I just got a quote for when I turn 20 in October

20, 3 points, one year ncb, 3.0ltr twin turbo Supra, comp, £1,226

I'm at a loss to understand this quote, but i will be snapping their hand off in two months time!

Edit: Just noticed other people have got some low premiums with Admiral, looks like they popular for young drivers in(relatively) fast cars.

If you are the main driver of the car, and you're not the main driver on the insurance, then there's a good chance that you are committing insurance fraud.

NCB is a discount off the premium. Companies differ in their NCB rates, but typically the maximum discount is 5 years NCB, and it can take 60% off the premium. (note the NCB rates vary from company to company, but since you won't see what's being discounted, don't just buy the 70% off figure)

For some companies, there is a discount available for a voluntary excess on accidental damage claims. This discount will apply to the whole premium. Since most of the premium calculation is geared by the third party risk and not the accidental (own) damage risk, then a comprehensive quote with a voluntary excess will sometimes result in a lower premium than TPFT.
