I know this is nothing to do with speed, but it's motoring law being ignored by big companies.

Who else has noticed quite few new luxury cars that aren't road legal, because the rear lights flash?

I'm not talking about once or twice a second like indicators, but somewhere around 200 times a second, so I can't see them flash if one I look straight at them. But who looks steadily at one point when driving? The flashing becomes quite obvious as you look away from the light.

The appropriate law is at www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si1989/Uksi_19891796_en_3.htm#(Tii)i3lampshowsteadylight

The cars in question are Jag XJ, some BMWs, Mercs, Peugeots (all top end, newest models only) and some new double decker buses.

I think that they are using LEDS instead of filament lights, which is fine. However they are turning them on and off quickly to dim them, instead of reducing the current. It's illegal and distracting, but they've got better lawyers than I have.

I noticed this a while ago and posted on a forum somewhere about it but no-one else had seen it. It is very distracting I find. I look forward to further responses.

Same idea is currently used in the marker lamps used at roadworks. Switching your eyes across them exposes the flickering youve described.

Well, as nothing seems to be done about pedal-cyclists with only a flashing rear light! Oh, silly me! These are motor cars! I'm sure something will be done!

Mind you, I'd rather have a cyclist with at least a flashing rear light than none at all.

Not sure if this is the same thing but a friend of mine has an 02 BMW M3 originally with the old style lights. He has since "upgraded" these to the official BMW LEDs as per the 03 model. I was following him one day and noticed that his were flashing in some sort of semi random pattern just as he was driving around. He hadn't noticed this before and it seems that there was a fault in there somewhere. He had to take it back to BWM anyway........

Just in case the above is completely off topic, I'll appologise in advance now....

Sorry for thread hijacking...

Just to let you know: it is a legal requirement for a pushbike to carry a steady light both front and rear at night, just like a motorcycle. The flashing LED lights should be purely supplemental.

Who cares what the law says, those flashing pushbike lights are brilliant. You can spot them from miles away and must have already saved lives. I think they should be compulsory on a pushbike, rather than illegal. Time for a change of law methinks.

And don't worry, I never ride my pushbike on the road anyway, far too dangerous. Stick to the path, much safer!

When it boils down to a question of being legal or alive, I know where the smart money goes
