No doubt i'll be put in my place shortly... but is there evidence to suggest that the female of the species take more sick days than blokes?

I'm staggered by the amount of time that our office girls are off sick. Having said that, it does seem it's the support staff that are off sick the most, so maye there's a link between better paid jobs and not taking the pi$$ smile

Get time off? Not that I know of.

I imagine they'd take a sick day if they were really bad though.

My (not statistically significant, anecdotal, availability-biased, etc.) experience is that people presented with an unsatisfying entry-level job go roughly one of two ways.

1) Knuckle down and work hard to get the promotion/move/whatever that gets them out of the job they don't like.

2) Spend their entire time being miserable, unproductive Facebook hogs who get away with the bare minimum.

Apart from the odd blagged interview you're far more likely to find type 1 people in senior positions than type 2.

As to the female/male split? I'll probably get dragged testicles-first over the coals by the feminists for this, but my view is that women are much more given to whinging about things without ever doing anything about them - i.e. fit into the second category above, whereas men tend to prefer solving problems rather than complaining about them. (If you've ever had some variant of the, "I wanted you to listen, not to offer a solution" argument with a significant other then you'll know what I mean by this one hehe )

Pfft, tonsilitis? I once made it to work when my head fell off. Bit of masking tape and I did a 16 hour shift yes

As far back as I can remember I've never had a day off sick (oh.. apart from chicken pox actually but I was working from home) + there is no point / chance when you work for yourself anyway!

...although not having to mix with the great unwashed does also mean I catch far less colds / flu.

I know a few females in management positions that would never dream of blagging a day off & still drag themselves in with a handbag full of tissues - bless 'em (from a distance).

Allegedley a femal in my office had 61 days off last year and already 20 ish + this year. However, it's always for really bad things like a week off with a cough, or a bad knee. I don't know how she copes.........

... I think I heard about her: the girl who gave a cough, her leg dropped off and floated down the river?

Told my team at my last job that I was bringing in Bradford Factor scoring to monitor sick leave and that a score of 100 or higher would result in conversations re health and wellbeing. The girl with a score of 1,250 must have been a little worried...

I took very little time of sick for many years then I seem to run into on incident after another (over several years mind)

Crippled with back pain
Colic (though I worked for 2 days in agony until doctor ordered me off work, I lost half stone in 4 days!!)
Proper Flu (only once)
Bursitis of the knee, was basically told by doctor if I didn't strict rest for one week (i.e. settee to bathroom or bed nothing else) I risked long term problems. (I still did paperwork!)
I've been sent home a couple of times after struggling in!

My main problem has been my back, I can work through it most of the time but on occasions it wins (usually when I can't get my socks on I know I'm in trouble!)

unless she has a recorded very serious illness, how does this person still have a job?

A woman I used to work with went off sick for 6 months as she was stressed about not being able to afford to move out of her parents house. Fair enough, but she was a moaning idiot and st at her job.

My GF's ex land lord has had 9 months off the last year with depression, sits at home doing fk ALL, and is hoping to be retired (has been there for 4 years) and expecting 50k pay off!

I should work for the govt too.

So so amazing how few sick days I've had since becoming a Contractor four years ago! Even before then I was a temp and was much the same! Additionally I will happily lose a day's pay to be off if I truly feel unwell and/or I would be spreading germs around the office by being in.

The amount of Permies though that are off for no reason fully paid, ON TOP OF their annual allowance of holiday days (some already in excess of 30 days as a basic) is shocking! There is a real lazy streak amongst certain employees who seem to get 'lost' due to the size of the company and as such adopt a shared mentality of knowing their rights before their censoreding responsibilities!

This one's always puzzled me. In one sentence people state that they won't have a day off work unless their feet have fallen off and the head is on backwards. Then they say "or i'll spread germs". Well that is every little sniffle going?!

I've taken 5 days off sick this year, four for when I caught bronchitis and another for a rather sharp back pain. There are a few folks in the office who seem to spend a considerable amount of time off sick, though.

Don't think I've ever had a 'little sniffle' whatever that is confused

Anyway surely we all spread germs all day every day whether ill or not?
