There's been a few threads recently from people who'd like an E39 M5, but unsure if they can justify it.

Just noticed one which has come onto PH classifieds.

Not sure how to do a link, but basically it's a 2000 'W' plate, with 105,000 miles and documented BMW service history(although the "full" word isn't mentioned) for £5995.

It's metallic red, which is quite unusual, with black leather, and looks tidy enough in the photos.

If it checks out, I'd say it would be a better bet than that one recently with the faulty Vanos units.

Being sold by Auto Trade Direct, I don't really know anything about them, whether they're good or bad.

IMO There is no such thing as a bargain. If someone has a good, maybe not a top notch, but good example they will price it as such.
Cheap cars appear for a reason. People are getting rid.
These cars are niche which means people either stick at a price, not wanting to give their car away, or slowly reduce it ( as I am having to do so according to the current demographic demand ). Those that appear cheap, a bargain, 'cheapest on PH/Autotrader' etc will always have a reason for being so.

Sorry to hijack off topic for a second, saw your advert Neil shame to see yours going, Looking for a B6 S4? You know you're going to be dissapointed after living with the M5 for so long.

You can get yourself a bargain, they do exist.. However be under no illusion. These cars CAN eat money in a very fast way. Realistically you need to keep a little cash fund of about £2-3k for emergencies. There is a myth about these cars that they are 'rock solid' blah blah. They are not and when they do break they can be very expensive to fix.

Hi,

Yes I'm sure you're right.
I'm only selling as I have a young family now and whilst the M5 makes a great family car, I'm after something just a little more new
And a little more sensible.
I know the S4 isn't the most focused of cars but I have only really heard good things about the car as a whole.
I can't say that I really push my car so the S4 with it's more relaxed personality would probably suit me anyway, plus it has a 4.2 V8 so should be entertaining.

Do you have any previous experience of them?

I can't really think of anything else that would suit my need. I had considered the 335i and 545i but they are quite rare.
I was just thinking of changing brands just for variety too.

I will shed a tear when mine does go though!

I would test drive the S4 if you haven't already. I drove an estate and it was horribly firm and understeered too much. My wife ran a 3.2 A3 for a while and it was sooooooooooooo nose heavy to the point that I worried whether it would ever turn in.

The 335 is a nice option although you need to be aware of the major turbo issues they had early on.

I drive one at a main dealers last sat. Yes the ride was firm, especially with the 19 inch RS6 wheels.
Not as focused as an M car but then I'm also after an alrounder...sounds like the M5!

I went to see that faulty VANOS one after posting about it. The thing was clattering - no, banging - like you wouldn't believe.

On reflection I think that a timing chain fault was the suspect - maybe the chain slapping against the cover or something. Anyway, could be all kinds of issues so I walked away. Nice car other than that though.

I have NEVER seen one that colour, interesting!
Definately worth a look, especially if it's local, you could spend all day on the internet reading peoples theories and scare mongering stories, best read up about it and go and see for yourself!
The car is a pre-facelift model, but for that price I wouldn't quibble, do your homnework, amke sure it's got a full years test and check what kind of warranty they offer, you can alway sell it on afte a couple of months at a higher price.
Epic cars, but agree with comments abouve, you've have to be pretty daft to not have a spare 2G's in the bank incase of any bad luck, but overall they're really reliable, I've got one as my daily drive with similar miles, and servicing and parts are usually alot cheaper than an E46 M3.

There has been much discussion about this car in General Gassing. Either its a good car and the seller is pitching it at a good price to move on a marmite colour or it needs work/has a patchy history.

I like the colour.

The price has been going up the more it is discussed on PH though.

I think with the B6 S4 the only issues you will have are the aux rads leaking and a bit of tensioner rattle on startup and that isn't a problem anyway. I never had mine understeer once on the public highway and on track would only do so in tight slow speed corners, and that was normally through entering a corner a little hot (driver error) not a poor chassis setup. Would agree the ride is on the firm side though.

Don't know it mate but it certainly looks ok cosmetically for the price. Plenty of pre-facelift cars in the same price bracket as post facelift cars and they shouldn't be, this one seems about righ IMO.
Really depends what your budget is, when i bought one i had to have the facelift spec, but with that usually comes the extra £££.
What are your reservations about it? It goes without saying that full history and your OWN HPI is a must.

It does look like a good car with a decent spec. Worth a look but check condition of brakes, tyres and clutch because they are all costly if they need doing. Worth looking for the usual rust spots too.

i noticed the silver trim is plastic is this correct also the front lenses are misted but these can be taken off and demisted so im told.tyres are a bit near the mark so how much roughly would a couple of tyres be.windmirror smashed also and are expensive im told.wheels are scuffed but otherwise seems ok.any more imput would be helpfull as im a m5 virgin

Can't comment on the trim, I'm sure mine is aluminium. Condensation is a common problem and one of mine is bad at the moment but is a DIY job. Tyres - depends on what brand, mid range £150ish to over £200 for top of the range. Shadow chrome refurbs are not cheap either so worth baring in mind. If it was me I would look at a couple of more to get a feel for what is out there, there's no shortage of choice.

As above, don't have those lights but I've heard it's a common problem and an easy fix, or just spend a bit more and get the facelift lights. As for the wheel refurb, check the link, top job done here! What is your budget for the car if you don't mind me asking?

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.p...

Forgot to add my trim is metal, are you sure it's plastic, that sounds odd unless it's been painted or wrapped and was originally wood effect?
