Hi All,

I'm looking at a car tomorrow and decided to do some due diligence beforehand by running an HPI check. I pulled the current number plate from the Autotrader ad, ran it through the HPI report through Pistonheads and came up with the following:

*
The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 18/05/2000
*
R1*** was applied to this vehicle on 25/08/1998
o This VRM has been recorded as being written-off
o The insurance write-off was recorded on 01/01/2005 against a HONDA S2000 CON
*
R6***** was applied to this vehicle on 15/01/1998
o There are no interests recorded against R6*****

Now, the current plate is R6*****, and the car is a BMW, not an S2000. It seems to me that from the above a private plate "R1***" was attached to the BMW for some time, then transferred to the S2000 which was subsequently written off. The problem is I'm not experienced with HPI's so I'd be very grateful if the experts on here could cast their eyes over the HPI report and give me their opinions. Should I walk away?

I did a search and didn't pull up anything similar. All other posts on HPIs relate to o/s finance with which this car has come up clear.

Thanks all.

You're correct. Nothing to worry about (in this instance)

Thanks, that's what I thought. Still haven't 100% finished the hpi check (need some details I can't get until I see the car) so hopefully that and the test drive will throw up any other issues.

Anybody else have any thoughts on this? Quinten has told me what I want to hear but a second opinion is always useful.. Thanks again.

No, it's fine. The data came up and they told you, that's it.

It translates roughly as: a previous owner of your car may subsequently have been a bad boy but he wasn't at the time he owned the car you're interested in.

The HPI on an Audi I bought had the same thing. The first owner had his plate on it and ten years later when the plate was on a Range Rover he borrowed money to buy, he got into money trouble. That was the only thing that linked him to me.

I think Quinten has got it right. I've had similar HPI reports and the plate has always been recorded against another vehicle and not the one that I'm HPI checking. You'll be fine in my opinion. If in any doubt, give HPI a call and get them to explain it to you. I believe, if you're looking at a BMW, that the marker is against the plate and not the car.
