I ordered a fairly expensive item from the USA.

It is currently showing up as 'in customs' - since 11am this morning

1) am i about to get bum raoed for VAT and duty?

2) does anyone know how long it will take to clear customs and be deliverable to my home? i am guessing i will have to pay royal mail the fees and pick it up?

Yes. It all depends on what the sender declared as the value on the customs form.

Mine took 3 days I think.
I had to go to the Parcelforce depot and pay the fees to get it released, I picked it up straight after the paying the bill.

Afraid so. Doesn't take long to clear customs but they'll clobber you via Royal Mail.
