English professor 'thrown out of Starbucks after objecting to corporate language'

Personally I can't that get wound up about the corporate language malarkey. You just get attuned to the correct sequence in which to order things, speak clearly to the barista as the environment is almost always noisy, use the terms they are familiar with, and as those annoying meerkats say.....

Some of the employees can be a bit literal and I don't especially understand the reasoning for the argument linked above re: you aren't going to get your bagel unless you use the exact words butter and cheese. WTF??

The Mrs used to work as barista, though not Starbucks, and certainly they had customers who got confused with the terminology and thought they were ordering something else, e.g. old dears ordering an "Expresso" and getting an espresso instead of the milky coffee they used to get in coffee bars in the 50s etc.

In the days when I did eat at Mc.D's, when they said with "Fries", I always said "No, chips please"......

I dropped my guard in the states when I placed an order which included "Chips", not realising until it turned up that "Chips" over the pond are "Crisps".

Basically not bothered with the termonology they use in these places, better things to be getting on with really.

At least they do not say "Ello mate, git you somefink?"

Mainly that, but I do hate some of the BS terms they use

"Yes can I have a Latte please"
"Tall, grande or venti?"
"...fk you"

So should the customers change to fit some corporation or should the corporation adapt to customer needs and the English language?

She was a waitress (or bartender) BTW, barista is an Italian word meaning bartender winkbiggrin

Would they not have sent you to a fish and chip shop then?

Chips are chopped up potatoes. Fries are mashed up potatoes shaped straight.

Not a Starbucks customer myself - well not for a long time - but is the question so unreasonable? Surely no worse than 'do you want chocolate sprinkles on that?' (Not on the bagel obviously wink )

I never quite understand why so many people spend so much money in these places. So expensive, so I don't bother with them smile .

The only time i've been in one regularly was when my friend worked in one of the Nottingham branches/houses/shops etc. He gave me freebie hot chocolate lick .

Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc etc. All pants IMO. Coffee tastes like, well, not coffee really. It's very expensive for what it is, and the organisations seem to be a little too far up their own arse for my liking. At the risk of causing some consternation amongst the PH coffee know-alls - I think a decent instant tastes better than the products of the above-named vendors.

Look for the 'illy' sign, if one really must grab a coffee when out and about. thumbup

McD's fries are chopped potatoes, not mashed and reformed

Starbucks are quite far down the chain of coffee quality IMO. Costas are better, but if given a choice of fast-food-coffee-bar-megachain I would go for Caffe Nero everytime.

In London, though, you can often get a better coffee from an independent if you are prepared to leave the main tourist areas. Better food too.
