i have a tdci ford focus 2003 reg

when its cool the engine starts perfect and quiet and runs perfect with a nice whistle from the turbocharger which fades as the engine warms up

when its hot (operating temperature) the engine starts up, on startup it makes a horrible noise (sounds like somethings about to snap if its near a wall) and the engine seems to shake violently - this all happens in half a second as the engine reaches idle speed, once it reaches idle speed it is very quiet again and if i turn it off there is sort of a quiet bang/clunk but i dont know if thats normal

ive took it to 2 garages now and none of them have give me a definate answer but had a guess at the DMF

whats your opinions guys?, the turbo is non hearable once the engine is warmed up aswell, why is this?

it is dual mass yes, my car is on 70,000 miles

is there much else that goes wrong at this mileage?

and would the flywheel affect the turbo whistle dissapearing when warm?

It's the dual mass flywheel as has already been mentioned.

is there any cheaper way to replace it, i.e. weld it tohgether or anything?

and how can you tell it is that, its been like this for 4 months and not got worse

Because I deal with them all the time and the focus is one of the worst offenders after the Transits.

just accept that that's what it is.

buy a new one, drop gearbox, change it.

If you really want to know what it is, take it to a garage and get them to remove the gearbox and have a play with the DMF if they are any good they will know if its within tolerance or not.
Then you can either replace it with another one or find a supplier that can sell you a SMF conversion kit and get that fitted.
If they take off the gearbox and find all is good then its something else.

and is the whole changing the flywheel etc a hard job? i wouldent mind saving on labour costs if i could do it myself

if you have to ask, then no it's not DIY for you.....

Never worked with fords so I have no idea what kind of a job it is. I have mostly worked with VAG group cars that can have the same problem and depending on the model it can be a few hours work.
How much it costs depends on what garage you take it to.

You can pick up solid flywheel kits for around the £300 mark (comes with replacement clutch etc)
Dual mass flywheels on their own usualy start around £300
