granddaughters Peugot 203, W reg

anybody got any ideas, clutch problem:
99% of time clutch is OK, but every now and then when you press the clutch pedal there is a clunk and the clutch goes straight to the floor and the engine stalls.
She has been told by a local garage (not a Peugot dealer) that she needs a new clutch and will cost around £300 as they have to take the gearbox out to get to the clutch.
Appreciate any comments.

Sounds like there is something wrong with the release fork or maybe even the pedal if its got a self adjusting mechanism on it. I would of thought its more of a £200 job. I am assuming you mean a 206?

The Peugeot 206 has an automatic adjuster built into the clutch cable. These fail all the time. Your granddaughters cable is on it's way out. Change the cable the clutch will be fine.

Bloody hell they saw your grand daughter coming, £300 for a clutch when all it needs is a new cable.
Should be a relatively easy job to do yourself

I had the same problem once with my old 206. Fitted my own clutch for the princely sum of £60 for the clutch, £10 for the trans fluid and a day lost from my life. Remarkably fun exercise.

Clutch cable is a bit of a bugger to get at. Be prepared for a tricky job full of swearing.

cheers guys, seems it is the ratchet that is causing the problem, and another local garage (trustworthy one) has quoted £100 to sort it for her.

£70 to fit a £30 cable Takes 30mins to change!
