Age old question - I want a V8, suggestions please.

I want a V8. At the moment I've got an '84 Tdi LandRover Ninety (cage, winch, big tyres, cliche...) and an '03 MGF, the 135bhp 1.8 one. I want to replace the MG, I'll miss 40mpg but I want to go a bit faster with a V8 noise, I have £8k to spend and I've always loved British cars. I have tools.

Options on my list are:

• Jag XK8
• MGB V8 (but the flat cap brigade push the prices upwards)
• Stag (but again, coffin dodgers force me towards a dodgy Rover conversion)
• Something from the early Ninetys TVR stable

V8 into the LR isn't an option, just spent too much time and effort getting bigger power (read: "lumpy delivery and lots of smoke") from the diesel and I love it like a puppy loves biscuits. Am I missing an obvious option?

My Dad and i completed our MGB Roadster V8 conversion this summer. It's a 3.5 lump with a few tweeks which should be putting out around 200 horses....the way the cute little 'B' shifts now is comical, really addictive just giving it the beans all the time! It makes my old 928 (manual) seem slow!

Would you get a tatty MG RV8 for 8k? The classifieds seem only to go down to 10k.

You said you've got a budget of £8,000 which will easily buy you an MGB V8 with cash to spare, same with the slag. Also I assume you know why they have a Rover 3.5 dropped in?

Some of the others on your list may not be too expensive but are either very old or could give your wallet a nasty surprise if they go wrong.

Probably not what you are looking for but how about an Audi S8. Cheap as chips 360 hp and like driving around in a boardroom.

problem this suggestion is it's not a STD type of v8 ie big rev range and not that lazy a power delivery unlike the big block v8's with red lines at 4,500rpm!!!

Curious, what mods are on the Tdi, I run a modded 200.

As for V8's, well anything RV8 powered is an option. Wedge shape TVR's are good value these days, they weren't 10 years back, so I bought a Triumph TR7 and since 2001 has run a modded 3.5 RV8.

But there's lots of choice, even a barge like a Lexus LS400 and Caddy STS Sevilles are great value these days.

Fox Mustangs are good value and then there's the host of sn95 models, 3rd gen fbodys and even Thunderbirds for sensible money.
