Anyone ever had an issue with very occasionally not being able to put the car in gear?

I have had a leaky slave on old car so I know what thats like, as I had the gear box blow up so I know what thats like too... But it seems to jump out of 1st gear only apon changing to second causing a jolt (Like someone driving a new car and quite get the feel of it) With the clutch pedal depressed fully and 1st selected now I can hear a very slight metal on metal noise almost like its not completed properly.

Last night it wouldnt go into any gear for a min or two, then after a couple pumps of the clutch it was fine. Could the slave be getting stuck? Admittedly I havent checked the levels but I shall do that tonight. I dont want to drive anywhere and get stuck

First job, check clutch fluid level. Is it low or have any black bits in it?

Have you got a patch under the car of clutch fluid, which may be quite small or is the drivers carpet wet below the master cylinder?

Do you only have trouble selecting a gear when the engine is running?

It really does sound like either your master or slave is leaking a look in the master cylinder resevoir will confirm this without too much trouble.

Let us know what you find.

Regards
Simon

Check the transmission tunnel cover is clear of the stick. It may be loading the stick in first and then blocking it's path going to second.

Mine did this with 5th although would pop out when cruising on the the motorway on a trailing throttle.

Just what Simon Says but I was extremely dull when I did this so I would recommend taking the carpets out (including the front pedal-board one) and put tissue paper down below and around the clutch pedal.

But it sounds like the Master Cylinder - Good Luck thumbup

So predictably I went to the car now and it wont go in gear when engine is running at all. Fluid is full hasnt leaked, although its off colour. What job do I need to do you think?

Possibly an internal seal in the master? Not leaking externally but not pressurising the slave?

Not necessarily sudden. Mine was the same - poor pedal, bled clutch, didn't help. Got in it a week later intending to drive it to APM and couldn't get a gear. Trailered car there - fingers had gone (42k miles)

Sounds like this is going to get expensive.

Well, in orer of expense/complexity, I would plump for
Master Cylinder Seal Kit first at £12

Then Replacement Master Cylinder at £73

Then Clutch Slave Seals at £30

and, finally, Replacement Raceprooved Slave at £290

By the time you've got to 3) you will see if Fingers are busted - but I have a feeling in my heart that that will not be your prob.

Just fitted a AP Racing standard one to mine from TVR Power then thrashed it around Bruntingthorpe at 155mph,no issues, clutch is very light and no notchiness in the gearchange.
