Hi guys,

After deciding to buy a Cerbera instead of a 911 I am now looking to reverse my decision by selling the Cerbera to buy a Porsche!

So my question is which model should I opt for? I commute about 50 miles per day so it's needs to be ok for motorway and traffic driving, but most importantly I need something to satisfy my thirst for the 'fun factor'.

Budget is up to £25k and I have so far considered the following:

964 C2
964 RS
964 Turbo 2
993 C2
Boxster S

Any thoughts guys & girls?

Ohmygawd... it would be easier to narrow it down a little first I suggest you have a look at the Porsche forum archives, maybe do a search for a few of the model names at the top of your list, or have a look at Dr Alex's model history/buying guide in the Porsche section.

The simple fact is that the type of Porsche you need reflects the type of person you are and what you want to use the car for. And no-one knows that better than you.

In a nutshell, the modern ones are technically better but have less character. And if you want maximum excitement or performance in any model year, you need to look beyond the standard models and go for the RS/GT3/Turbo etc. The running costs often go up if you do this tho'.

If coming from a TVR, I would only recommend RS/Turbo as these are about the only ones that IMO deliver the same exhilaration. You can get a 964RS or a 965 Turbo 2 for your budget. I would recommend the 964RS.

If you want an easy life after Cerb ownership, go for more of a cooking model 911, or the Boxster S would be perfect.

However, all porsches are fantastic and whatever you get it's probably a move in the right direction

Cheers
Dom

For the mileage that you will be doing, I would look at the 993 Carrera or Boxster.

i went from cerbera ownership to porsches. I am more of a road going person and not track; i would test drive a 996 (later model); 993 C2; then the 964 then see of those which takes your interest, matches your needs / personality. And then contrast agst a 964 RS. If you are a mad track person i reckon you will find it hard to turn down the 964 RS.

If your looking for a Toy, then it has to be RS or Turbo. If it's a toy for the track, then RS, toy for the road, then Turbo. If you want every day car then Box or 993.

Simple really. I guess service costs are not relevant as they wont register next to the TVRs running costs.

PS. Dom would recommend an RS to your blind, invalid Granny, before admitting the Turbo is the better car

That's the problem, I want and everyday toy!

The Turbo has always appealed, the RS also, but I think the RS maybe a little too raw for everyday use. I also think if I start to rack up significant miles on an RS it would depreciate quickly. Could I get a RHD Turbo for £25k?

Sensible head would probably point to a 993, but I've read a number of peoples opinions on the Boxster S and it sounds like a real 911 alternative.

The 996 is out of my price range and I believe this to be too refined for what I would be looking for anyway.

You can use an RS everyday*, they have more creature comforts than a Caterham and ride no worse. Heater, stereo, no leaks... what more do you want?

My blind invalid Granny loves them

*That said I did commute in a Caterham for 2 years and found it quite normal. You may be less of a nutcase.

Respect WILL be due when I have built it using my Advanced Lego construction Part 1 City and Guilds qualification Until that point, respect is only due from the local dealers who know a good pimpwagon when they see it

*Cough* I think the only respect due is for collecting an (incomplete) set of parts in a garage. Dom has twelve years of night school yet in order to come to understand the term "build".

Sorry for the hijack, back to the Porker selection...

Servicing costs on a Turbo 2?

Strictly for research purposes you understand...

They do seem even rarer than Turbo 4's though...

965 turbo is probably the most expensive of the turbos to run....it has solid tappets unlike the hydraulic versions on the 993 which adds to labour costs on the major services......probably worth the expense though...a relatively attainable 400bhp and 2wd....Fantastic

It costs me £900 a year all in from an OPC. You'll be glad of those tappets when you start looking for serious power.

The Boxster S is in no way a 911 alternative.

It does not handle like a 911. It is lighter and the engine is in the middle. Its not just the grip (911s do this too) its the balance that is quite wonderful - but this is oh so different to a 911.

The 996 is so damn clever, especially the 4WD ones, like Daz's Turbo, that the fact that the engine is in the wrong place is (almost) irrelevant. This was certainly not true of my old 911 and I expect is not true of the 993. Don't back off in corners!

If you want the 911 character a Boxster will not "do it" for you. If you want a superb handling sports car that you can use daily...

In terms of Power, mine has a full headers, cat bypass, 1bar boost and a K&N. This is enough for you to show a clean pair of heals to:

360's
RS6's
Noble's
430 BHP 993tt

Oh, and it spits flames.
