Interesting sports cars/coupes you can fit bikes in/on?

This isn't strictly a what car thread, although I can't deny I'll be taking notes (along with a few other Pistonheads mountain bikers I suspect...)

Somewhat inspired by the photo of the road bike wedged improbably into the back of an RX8 yesterday, what interesting cars can you fit a bike in? Or for that matter, which are known to have a safe and practical bike rack available (without bending boot lids, marking paintwork, fouling spoilers or anything like that)?

And just to make it interesting, conventional estates and off roaders are not allowed. We're looking at 2 seat or 2+2 saloons and coupes...

A Chimaera's boot easily swallows a decent mountain bike.

You can fit one in a Corrado easily enough.

I'd imagine that anything which will take a tow bar or a roof rack will take a bike rack attached to it.

You can a bike in most cars when you take the wheels off. I could get 2 in the back of my Z4.

I'm a roadie though - you mountain bikers do tend to get a bit muddier.

DH bikes can take up quite a lot more space too.

Yep. I think that's the answer for a lot of these. As mentioned above I know often conventional bike racks are liable to damage the bodywork on sports cars - MX5 bootlids and the like.

That said, carrying the bikes inside the car is a bit more discrete and a lot more (physically) secure. It's always my preferred method as you can chuck the car around on the way to the trails without the fear of losing your bike off the back...

I've heard people saying you can fit a bike frame in a Chimaera boot before. Somewhat surprised, but I'll take people's word for it. Is that with the forks and so on still attached?

What I'd really like is something big enough to fit two bikes and two people.

There's a company that makes a bike rack for the Elise, but it does require a bit of bodywork modification to fit it (you have to drill a hole in the rear clam for a mounting bolt) and it's damned expensive.

Via some clickthroughs while looking at MR2's the other day, I ended up on the Celica GT4 owners club, looking at their classifieds.

It would have to be a GT4 (not a regular FWD celica) to be considered, but still, they have a massive hatchback rear end, and lots of appeal in a 'play at being carlos sainz' type way.

I also looked at a Starion turbo recently too, just like a Japanese 944.

Supras and 300ZX's have hatches, not boots lids aswell I beleive.

My favourite one was getting my bike regularly and quite comfortably into this:


Frame behind the seats and wheels in the boot. Lots of bin bags covering up all the mucky bits.

Nope, fraid not. It was triggered by the recent RX8 threads and the fact someone's parked rather a nice graphite grey one outside my house at the moment. Started thinking I could maybe MTFU on the fuel consumption and live with one as a daily driver. I know you can get one bike in, then I felt a bit mean about potentially leaving the missus at home and it got me wondering which interesting cars would accomodate two.

Honda Integra Type-R DC2? I regularly take 2 mountain bikes (1x full sus, 1x hardtail) over to cannock a couple of times a week. I even got hold of some fitted waterproof seat covers to keep the recaros from getting filthy and sweaty. the boot swallows them fine, the only downside is it can be quite easy to scratch the bikes on each other if you aren't careful. I use towels to pad in between them. Oh yes, I do have to remove the front wheels.

They don't make a roof rack for the later shape boxster, but I just sorted myself ut with one of these, does the job.

Bike racks can fit almost anything. We had a Halfords (made by Paddy Hopkirk in Leighton Buzzard) one. Went on the MGF's as well as it did the Rover 800 or Jaguar XJ.

To fit in cars. Then it's length more than anything. Roll on ITR's in DC2 and 5 guises or a 2 Door Impreza maybe.

Trouble with wedging things like this in a car they don't really fit in, is it's ok for a one off. But becomes a pain if its a regular thing and you will end up damaging either the car or bike, or likely both at some point.
