So, the TT has gone. Had to turn it into two cars. Missus got an A3 for work and I need a run around. Due to not being particularily insurance friendly i can't decide on what to get.

I've basically got a budget of £2000 for insurance and the car together and was looking about. I'd like a 3 door and i came across some decently priced 316's which fall into my budget. I know its not much of a PH car but was wondering what the real opinions on them were?

Most have milages over 100k, how bad/good are the engines for reliablity?
Anything I should look out for if i go look at one?
Any other options or opinions?

Had a saloon version of this car. Did me well, few bits and bobs to look out for body wise. Rust on arch lips, door sill rust on kick plates, corner of boot lip rust. The bushes go all the time and you get the knock knock sound...all round pretty decent car for the money. Just check the engine is running smooth and not jumping about idling.
It is an under powered lump for the car but you get the nice car and low insurance.

Yeah, if insurance wasn't an issue i could get something a lot better but for daily pootling about (i do <4000 miles a year) this should do fine.

+1 for the 318. Won't set your pants on fire but enough go for everyday use. Reasonable economy and running costs (parts are cheap, as is insurance) and if looked-after they should run and run. Just sold my 135k mile example for £1200 and it had a fresh MOT. I'd expect it to still be kicking around in another 10 years and have c.200k on the clock. Engines are strong, body and under body can be susceptible to rust but it's not terminal. Add in the usual BMW appetite for bushes!

Check my profile for the detailed history of mine. For £2k you'll easily find a good one (but shop around) and pay for your insurance.
