Picked up an 03 plate 330d sport for my son at the weekend as he did'nt have insurance cover. Never realy liked BMW's
but what a motor this is, after a brief exploration of the fantastic performance and handling I joined the motorway for the 100 mile journey home at normal traffic speeds. Zero'd the computer before I started and was amazed to see 63.5 MPG on leaving the motorway and an overall of 60.4 on reaching home.
Unfortunately he's got insurance now and had it back.

Were you driving like a saint? That MPG recording seems very high, even if im very careful I might touch 50mpg and i have a measly 320d.
I thought it was high also, not sure how accurate these computers are. Was driving between 65 ans 85 as the traffic allowed. I always leave a good distance in front though and rarely use the brakes on the motorway. Its also a manual and was on cruise most of the time.My son got 47 mpg wellying it to work this morning.
I've got a 120d at the moment but am looking to move back to an older E46 to free up some cash - had two E46's so far and they're in a totally different class in terms of quality to my 1 series which feels like it's interior's been made from old lemonade bottles !
To be honest I'm amazed that the three litre Diesel achieves those sort of mpg figures, I do well to get 38mpg out of my 120d.

I was totally shocked by the mpg on my 335d when I first got it. Budgeted for 30 mpg yet it never goes below 40.
On way back from bristol today, 45mpg and 650 mile range. Sad but amazing at the same time. Neddle sits bang on 50
Best of all I don't have to try. So I don't feel boring,i just stick it in cruise and am pleasently surprised at the other end.

I own both at the momment. And I agree completely with the above completely. I get around 40mpg out of the 1 series and the 330d averages 44mpg in daily driving (country lane commutes, both driven reasonably hard). We went on holiday in the 330 recently fully loaded with a large top box on on the cruise at 0.8 leptons and got 48mpg.

Don't have first hand experience of the E90 three, but the E46 really takes some beating in my book.

Had an manual E46 330cd coupe a few years back and got to say I don't recognise all these claims of way over 40mpg! Combined figure for my car was (from memory) 42.5mpg and I couldn't get near that unless I was on a long run and drove fairly gently; the norm was more like 38mpg (mainly motorway/dual carriageway/A-road driving) so basically I was around 10% down on the combined figure most of the time. In similar driving in various petrol cars I've consistently beaten the combined figure by around 10% so I guess that was one of the reasons I was disappointed in the 330cd.....
