Roof rack - securing to it

This is a dumb question I know but I have a square bar roof rack and want to transport a desk

Legs off and in the car, but what do I need to buy to securely attach the desk top to the rails?

I thought about rachet straps in an x-shape over the top of the desk, but then how is it prevented from moving forward/back ?

lots of rope in all directions and if there is holes where the legs go thread it through there

or rent a van

If the straps are tight enough it shouldn't move, but may damage the table. Some padding might suffice.
