Hi all,
With second baby due next Jan I'm might look at getting something slighty bigger than the Primera I run at the moment. Must cost no more than 6k, diesel, and manual.
I was thinking:
Honda Accord touring, (huge boot)
or
Nissan X-trail (higher up so don't ruin back when loading baby)
Anyone got experiences with these cars?

Accord Tourer is a good 'proper' sized estate car, same as the bigger Volvos & Audis.
Things like the SAAB 9-3, V50, X-Type, 159 & A4 etates have no more useable room than a modern hatchback.
The Volvo V50 boot is compromised to to a high boot floor and the rest have wheel wells which intrude too far into the boot meaning you can't lie the pram flat across the boot. Same goes for the rest although IIRC the X-Type had a reasonable boot.
New shape Passat, Accord, A6 Avant, Volvo V70 E Class & Vectra have what IMO consider to be an estate car boot the rest are form over function.
People will argue later on that they fitted a family of 6 into a Mini when they were a lad & endured 8hr trips to Cornwall, so you should also.

X-Trail looks good, but not sold on the looks. We looked at the RAV-4 but the boot was no bigger that the Leon it was replacing, so guessing the X-Trail may be the same?

I have got a 2005 Accord Tourer, mine is a petrol though! It does have a very big boot! I think at the time it was largest in class when it came out! It is very well put together and rides and handles well for a big car too!
Yes, the boot is huge, the only problem with Honda's is their relatively poor fuel consumption.Sand1 said:
Skoda Octavia would be a good choice. I paid 6k for mine last year, 06 plate Laurin & Klement 2.0 TDi 140 BHP. It's fully loaded with heated leather, sat nav, xenons, cruise etc. Alot of car for the money with a huge boot.

- Engine management issues (overboosting- apparently caused by a coked up turbo), i've been running it on V-Power & not had any issues since.
- Airbag light
- Wheelbearings
- Rust on the tailgate
- Eats tyres- they're not cheap because of the weird size (235/45/17) & need to be reinforced (97 rating)
We have a 2.0tdi 140 Passat estate, huge boot. just done camping trip to Newquay cornwall with 2 adults and 3 boys. there is enough room in the boot for luggage for the five of us plus 2 four man tents sleeping bags etc... then there was the 5 mountain bikes.
economy was good too on the trip there we got 54mpg and an overall average for the week with trips out was 47.9mpg. very good for a car this size and plenty power too 6th gear all the way from j18 on the M6 to within 3 miles of the camp site.
the passat is also used for business trips and carries loads well 645kg payload is no problem and handling is not compromised 75mph on motorways is still safely done.

Also looking at family wagons and I used to be an advocate of getting estate cars over MPV/Higher type cars but have realised somethings. A higher seat, especially at the rear is nice to have, wide door openings also good. Driving pleasure, ie handling etc is out the window really as with kids on board cruising at speed limits and not barreling into corners, everything feels a bland.
Have you looked at MPV type cars, a bit higher than estates, good boot room and a nice large boot opening and not as compromised on road as something like an Xtrail. Sat in Corolla verso and Honda FR-V and both impressed with good interior room, easy access and good size boots without being huge on the outside.
As we don;t do many long trips but many short town trips ease of parking, ingress, visibility are more NB than handling or power etc.
If you like the Skoda Octavia estae but want a bit more height look out for their 'scout' version of the same car.
I can't believe that I am preferring things like this over a BMW/AUDI estate but priorities change...

The best family car is Mercedes S-Klasse. It's bigger than Primera, it could be diesel, not sure about manual and it could be 6K (if W140 and from albanian dealer).
