Anyone exprince this rather obvious creaking from behind the rear glass area? It happens when I go over bumps. Sounds like it's coming from the hood struts attached to the rear firewall or something rubbing against the glass?

Did not have the sound in my 90 SE.

Hi,

Could well be something askew with the struts, check all the mounting hardware for looseness, binding etc.

However, if I had to guess, I would suspect that your body to chassis mounting bolts have worked loose, pretty common problem.

On each side of the engine, up against the firewall, you'll see a metal tab coming from the subframce crossmember/tube extending upward. Running through each of these tabs is a pair of 13mm nyloc nuts. These need to be tightened. Access is generally a b*tch, unless you're decended from a long line of contortionists, but generally, tightening these will cure the problem. On some models, access is easier from below.

Sometimes (worst case), you will need to get a wrench on the other end of these bolts to really tighten them down. On some models, you only have to pull back the carpet to access them inside the cockpit, on others, you will have to make a small incision in the carpet to expose them enough to get the wrench on them. Good Luck. Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE
