Okay with the latest in a long line of issues with the Pug having come up (antipollution fault accompanied by Kanagarooing at anything above 50 and anything below 40, general lumpy drive and noisier than a Massey Ferguson tractor.) it’s time for it to go (once serviced and repaired in order to get a decent price for it in the first place). So it’s time to replace it and get a new supplement vehicle to the other Halfs A Class, requirements are as follows:
Cheap to Insure – I have 0 no claims discount accrued so cheap is the name of the game
Cheap to run – I’m part Scots and thus refuse to part with my cash if it can be avoided
Fun – IE not a like for like replacement for the 206
Budget – 1200 – 1600 at a push
Practicality is not a huge issue as the A class can handle pretty much everything day to day we throw at it. The biggest overriding issue is the car needs to be able to carry my 6ft 4 mid set frame without making me look stupid or causing me to drive with my neck at a 90 degree angle.
So folks, what say you….I eagerly await the first suggestion of MX-5

Apart from kit cars they are probably the cheapest thing to insure.
Can be cheap to buy and even better cheap to maintain. Ok they may like a little TLC and tinkering, but probably no more than your Pug has.
And they can be huge fun.
Slightly biased view because I own one (or at least others will say its biased even if it isn't, lol) But how about a TR7?
Seriously, it's not so different to an MX-5 in ethos or abiilty, It has a big cabin and loads of leg room, so I suspect even at 6'4" you should fit. Big boot and are easy to live with and work on.
Being a classic should make it cheap to insure. The 2.0 litre is peppy and offer up ok'ish performance in stock trim. But it's RWD and fun. A few simply mods and it can handle a lot better and also be at least warm hatch fast.
24-28mpg ability, good heater and loads of cheap parts. Also well within your price range.
Failing that, there are still loads of good cars for this money, but I have no idea how suitable for a tall person. And insurance on newer stuff will be more money.

What he said. Or both - my 1987 Ginetta fits me, but I'm a dwarf-like 6'2". New front discs were about £60 a pair, 6000 mile service stuff is £30 and easily done yourself in an afternoon even if you're a mechanical numpty. Obviously depreciation doesn't happen as long as it still goes and has an MoT (fibreglass body and galvanised chassis so no rust)Apart from kit cars they are probably the cheapest thing to insure.
It's also a laugh to drive, just look at that 195x14 rear tyre peeling off the rim
My Mrs is 6ft1 and she fits surprisingly well in my MGF - they're pennies these days, 40mpg and sensible to insure, especially the older ones. They're only 200kg heavier than an Elise, and if you swap the spare tyre for a can of silly string then you can fit a /surprising/ amount of stuff in them.
