Advice from 360 / Ferrari owners
Discussion
I am toying with the idea of buying a Ferrari and was looking for some help and guidance.
Thinking of either a 430 or 360........ I might be the odd one out but I think that i prefer the shape of the 360 even though it's older.......
My question is what are they like for servicing, reliability and cost to maintain.
How often are services? Do you suggest just main dealers or are there any specialists? Costs
Any major reliability problems or common faults?
Would you suggest taking out a warranty?
I have had porsches previously and the have offered trouble free a relative low cost motoring....... Am I naive to expect the same from a Ferrari?
Thanks in advance

The 430 is probably the performance car bargain of the century right now. Awesome car. I don't have a 360 so can't comment but 430 maintenance is annual service every year(800 quid) or major service every 12,500 miles(1500 quid) the 430 uses timing chains so no belt service every 3 years.
I've put 10,000 miles on mine in 9 months and it's been bloody amazin'. Only thing I've had to replace was exhaust silencer at 600 quid as it was pumping out white dust, something to do with the heatsheild material breaking down. I didn't need to do it the dust was just an inconvenience keeping the engine clean so I decided to change it.
The main common fault for the 430 is exhaust manifolds. Think that's about it.
If you buy an approved used 430 they now come with 2 year warranty.
John.

Thanks for the prompt reply John, Servicings is cheaper than I expected! I've put 10,000 miles on mine in 9 months and it's been bloody amazin'. Looks like I will be doing some car shopping this weekend!
Hello there. Here is my advice;
1. Whether 360 or 430 go for a spider, you wont regret it.
2. Of all the options you want, for me the MUST HAVES are an upgraded exhaust and wing shields.
3. Servicing is annually on a 360 with belts every other year, costs around £700 with £1300 for the belts plus whatever else they find.
4. Dont spend your life looking for an exact spec, you may never find it.
5. The door handles break a lot.
6. The wheels can rub going forward on full lock.
7. Batteries go flat very quickly if not used.
8. Be prepared to become very well acquainted with the bodywork as you will be endlessly cleaning, you willlove it.
9. As an ownership experience you will find it beats any other by miles.
Get to some meet ups via pistonheads and meet fellow owners if you can, you get some good tips, where are you based?

1. Whether 360 or 430 go for a spider, you wont regret it. I wouldn't go for a Spider. They're too ugly/wobbly/Chigwell for me.
2. Of all the options you want, for me the MUST HAVES are an upgraded exhaust and wing shields. Exhaust, yes. Shields are a personal thing.
3. Servicing is annually on a 360 with belts every other year, costs around £700 with £1300 for the belts plus whatever else they find. Belts are every 3 years/30K on a 360 and cost around £500. The F430 has a chain.
4. Dont spend your life looking for an exact spec, you may never find it.
5. The door handles break a lot. mNever had one break in 3 years, nor ever heard of one breaking.
6. The wheels can rub going forward on full lock. Not with standard tyres/wheels they don't.
7. Batteries go flat very quickly if not used. As per any other car that isn't used!
8. Be prepared to become very well acquainted with the bodywork as you will be endlessly cleaning, you willlove it.
9. As an ownership experience you will find it beats any other by miles.

Differences of opinion! I am not what you might call an enthusiastic driver so I dont notice the car being wobblier, although you are right, they are.
I found the wingsheilds set off the car really well and it looks bare without.
Didn't know the belts were every three years, but got the price right.
The door handle has loads of threads mentioning it breaking. Not breaking off, just not working.
Again with batteries, they go flat faster than a regular car it seems to me although probably no more so than a lambo or similar.
1 - Door handles (i'm experiencing problems as we speak) - do your research, check the ferrari blogs (www.fcars.co.uk) and you'll find alot of door stories
Yet super cheap to fix
2 - Alarm can be problematic (same thing mine goes on for no reason, will be checked for the 2nd time this month) - as above, go on the ferrari blog and you'll find out more about them
Yet cheap to fix
but it wouldnt happen on a Porsche

My alarm has been absolutely fine.Yet cheap to fix

TBH, I've never had one problem with my 360, my 997 has been more problematic!
Agree with most things commented on so far, apart from "Spiders", I find the lines, of the Modena much nicer and besides I'm paranoid about some tosser throwing a fag end into the back of the car as I drive past. But each to his/her own both great cars.
Compromise- good point you will have to compromise at some point be it mileage, maybe colour, whatever just don't be surprised at what some people call mint and what is available!.
One final thing thing, I found that most things are less expensive than I have read on many sites, not cheap but you find yourself a good inde things are a lot more bearable.
Happy hunting.
Oh and if your coming to the midlands I might have my car up for sale soon if you want some guidance on what to look for.
Cheers
Steve

I agree about the modena being a prettier car and it's what I originally wanted, but the noise and feeling you get when driving the spider is just awesome, I'm so glad I made the choice to go topless now....I very rarely use the car with the roof up. It doesn't matter what model/colour/options you go for, just get one, the smile you'll get when driving it will be bigger than you'll ever have in the Porsche!

Thanks guys.
What is the general consensus on manual vs F1?........
What is the general life expectancy of clutch / gearbox on each?.
I have heard some horror stories that the f1 can get through them each 15-20K? is this true? Any experience and idea of costs to replace welcomed.

Depends where and how they are driven. I've heard horror stories of F1 cars being driven around town lasting only 7-8k but I think that's not realistic, I think 15k ish is more the mark. Someone will be along soon and say they've done 80 k on theirs. Manual 25-30k.
Budget £1400 to replace at an indi.
Cheers
