Just watching this, and looking at the cars:

RS2000
Rover P6
Granada estate
B reg Transit
G reg Renault Trafic
80s Mini
Even if you look in the back of any shot on the road, they're all old cars - when Big Chris gets into his Cobra at the end there's a 60s Ford or something behind him!
etc.

It's a 1998 film. Is there any reason apart from artistic licence that they're ALL old cars? Newest thing was that Renault van!

At a guess, because they're all cars Ritchie thought were a little bit "sweeney" and not 98 models so as to remove the film from the late 90's, and thus create a little bit of a timeless feel.

Exactly this IMO. It gives a classic London gangster feel with a modern twist on it, probably same reason the lighting and filters are used as they are. Works very well I think, can't see it ageing particularly quickly.

I guessed that was it, hemce the artistic licence comment Was wondering if it was set in "times past" but remembered the mobile phones at the end.

Forget there was a Ford Granada/Consul Sweeney stylee too, maybe the estate was a Cortina...

The estate is a mark 2 Granada Ghia (or Ghia X!). The white Sweeney-style one is a mark 1 (the driver is Lock, Stock producer Matthew Vaughan, who is married to Claudia Schiffer).

Agree with comments on the reason for the older cars - the film was made and set in 1998, but the cars, clothes, subdued colouring etc were all chosen for stylistic reasons.

why is it so many people trash everything richie does. yes, he's made a couple of stinkers, but lock stock and a few others were very watchable. i actually quite like layer cake and rock 'n' rolla.

Layer cake wasn't a Guy Ritchie film - it was directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn (who was also Lock Stock producer).
