Traveling to Cornwall Bank Holiday weekend

I was planning on leaving either Friday at about 11 or on Saturday morning, what am I best off doing to avoid the traffic?

Am I better off leaving at 4-5 in the morning on Saturday?

ETA - Travelling from Bristol.

where from? My olds drive down most weekends to Falmoth from Swindon, my dad last week says there was lots of traffic when he left at 6am.

A few weeks back I did it at 2am and it was dead as a dodo, I have also found the evenings (7pm) quite quiet from Exeter onwards. I'd stay off the A303 whatever time though!

We go down to Cornwall from Bradford most years, set off at 2AM with an aim to past Bristol by 7 ish, the traffic from Bristol on is fine. Wouldn't leave it any later though.

When I go down to Cornwall from Warwickshire area I leave about 6am. The traffic is usually before Bristol so you'll prbly be ok leaving ay 11am. However if your happy to leave early id do that to be on the safe side.

You really have to be a early bird for this journey, last time i went to cornwall i left gloucester at 4am, still took 3 odd hours. Its the Avonmouth bridge section and past Weston that can be the worst bits, once you are passed those id try and stick to the back roads, clearer and often more fun except for if you get stuck behind a tractor :-(
